What to see in Kyrgyzstan?

Kyrgyzstan tours guides

Today I want to talk about the places in Kyrgyzstan that are worth to see and things that are not worth to be paid. First of all try to stay not more then one day in one place (i'll explain later). Lets start with our list:

Bishkek

Capital of Kyrgyzstan is very cozy and green city but one day is enough to see all the spots. What to see: Main square Ala Too, Victory square, Historical Museum, Art museum (optional for people who like paintings), House of Parliament, Oak Park.... and now main tip about city tour. Usually, itineraries have Ala Archa National Park on a separate day, do not agree with this and go to the park in the same day with city tour (if you don't want to go hiking), othrerwise you will have too much time in hotel.

Issyk Kul lake

Most itineraries contain Burana Tower - a must see place, do not refuse this. If you go from Bishkek, the best place to spend night is Cholpon Ata. If you go from Chong Kemin valley go directly to Karakol. Some itineraries don't have the right duration of driving time. Every year roads in Kyrgyzstan become better and better so you you can reach your point of destination much faster. One night is ok. What to see: Rock paintings museum, Historical museum, Ruh OrdoComplex, Grigorievskoe gorge.

Karakol

This one is the place where you can stay 2 days and the reason is Altyn Aashan. Usually, a city tour in Karakol doesn't take more than two hours. So you can go on a city tour and Altyn Arashan hot pools in the same day. Or you can spend the whole day in Altyn Arashan, which is not a bad idea. What to see: Dungan mosque, Saint Trinity Church, Przhevalskiy Museum, Cattle market (Sunday), Altyn Arashan.

Song Kul lake

Most itineraries have 2 days on the shore of this lake, not the best idea for a regular tourist. Thats why the best place to start your journey to Song Kul is Koschkor village. It's just 3 hours driving. And you don't need to spend the next day in that area. Its a very beatiful and remote place, but there's not really much to do. If you come early in the afternoon, you have enough time for horseback riding and hiking.

Osh city

A very nice city with a long history and very hot climate. If you don't want to be burned by the sun, start your city tour not later than 8.00 a.m. The main thing to see in Osh is the Suleiman Mountain. What to see: Suleiman Mountain, Osh Market, Animal market.

So these are the main destinations in Kyrgyzstan that people usually visit. Of course there are a lot of different places and landscapes that you will see driving from one place to another.

Now about the food in Kyrgyzstan: You dont need to worry about your meal because local restaraunts and cafes have a great varity of dishes. So what to eat and what to try? Let's start with the best national dishes: Shorpo (meat soup with potatoes), Lagman (noodles with meat and vegetables), Manty (steamed dumplings with meat), Plov (rice and meat), Shashlyk (kebab)....etc. If you are vegetarian it's not a problem at all, they can serve you food according to your demands.

Local guides are strongly recommended because you can economise much more money with a local guide. Some local people still think that pockets of foreign tourists are full of dollars and tell you double prices for service, especially in villages and remote places.

So, that things that i recall from my memory. If you have any questions, just ask me.

Good points on some activities, good description of the menu. But people come for holidays, it is boring to drive all your holidays without meeting people and having time for relaxation. In your article all about driving, please add some cultural and spiritual tours.

the article describes an itinerary according to the wishes of the author. That s all right. But everyone has it s own wishes and interests and should work out an itinerary matching the own demands. My itinerary through Kyrgysztan, which I worked out myself was quite different.

It is not an instruction on what to do))) It's just some tips for travellers.... I've been working as a guide and driver for 7 years now and this article is based on wishes and complains of my customers. Most part of them buy tours in travel agiencies and then they don't understand why we stay 2 or 3 days in Karakol or some villages where there's not much to do. \

I like this website, it gives freedom of choise and everyone can write his own point of view.... I think its very important to see different points of view.

I realise that the writer is giving "his" opinion of what to see but I honestly think that he either does not know the country or has decided that injustice is acceptable.  Song Kol is not a place for a quickie - you miss so much.  And time in the lesser known mountain regions is so rewarding.  Sadly I think his guests must leave with such an incomplete picture of the Kyrgyz Republic.
