The ultimate Pamir Highway tour, Dushanbe to Bishkek-11 days

A road trip like no other, a journey that travels right across the roof of the world on one of the highest roads in the world, through some of the highest mountains on the planet, over the fascinating Pamir with astonishingly different cultures and scenery. This is an overland odyssey that you won’t find anywhere else. This tour will take you from Tajikistan capital, Dushanbe to Kyrgyzstan's Bishkek over the Pamir Highway in Tajikistan and Suusamyr valley of Kyrgyzstan. You will learn about two different cultures of Central Asia, Nomadic Kyrgyz, and a sedentary Tajik.

Day 1: Dushanbe - Kalai Khumb

We will start our journey from Dushanbe. Departing in the morning we will cross the Shurabad Pass (2200m) and visit Hulbuk ancient fortress 8th Century which has been recently restored. We continue towards the Pamirs and make our way to Kalai Khumb, driving through beautiful scenery and interesting villages en route. This area is a little more conservative, and we see many men with beards, and women wearing traditional dress. We will arrive in Kalai khumb (360km) in the early evening. Overnight in a guesthouse in Dashtak village near Kalai Khumb. LD


Day 2: Kalai Khumb - Khorog

This morning we will set out to Khorog, the biggest city in Pamirs. We will drive along the Afghan-Tajik border for 260 km with the views of Afghan villages across the river. Before leaving Darvaz region we will also visit Karon archeological site - an ancient town with polo field. BLD


Day 3: Khorog - Garmchashma

Khorog is the administrative center of the Pamir region, dramatically set deep in the valley at the confluence of the Panj and Ghund rivers and boxed in by the mountain peaks. There are a number of places to visit, from the Ethnographical Museum to the surprisingly well stocked Botanical Gardens (one of the highest in the world), and the town is the site of one of Central Asia’s few university campuses after which we will drive to the famous Garmchashma Hotspring, where we will take bath in the evening.


Day 4: Garmchashma - Yamg Wakhan

Today we will head to Wakhan Valley. The road to Yamg village is mostly tarmacked, so it should be a pretty smooth journey. We’ll make a stop for lunch in Ishkashim and continue further the valley with stops along the way and have a look at the old castles, shrines that once guarded this branch of the Silk Road, including Yamchun Fort. We’ll stay overnight in Yamg village at a guesthouse. BLD


Day 5: Yamg - Langar

Today we start with the visit of a local museum in Yamg village and continue on along the Wakhan valley stopping off at a 4th Century Buddhist stupas at Vrang, reminders of the ancient pilgrim caravans that passed through the region. Overnight in a homestay in Langar village. BLD


Day 6: Langar - Alichur

After a hike to see some of the 6000 petroglyphs, we gain a unique view of Afghanistan before crossing the Khargush Pass and arriving at Yashik Kul Lake. Having lunch in the nearby village we then drive back to join M41 and continue Alichur village. Overnight in Yurts. BLD


Day 7: Alichur - Karakul

We set off in the morning towards Murgab stopping off at some lakes. Having lunch in Murgab then we continue to Karakul lake and village. On the way, we cross the Ak Baital Pass at 4655m and continue on to the stunning Karakul Lake, with a walk along the shores to our homestay. BLD


Day 8: Karakul - Yurt camp near MT in Peak

Continuing on the Pamir Highway we will set off for the Kyrgyz border today. We will cross the border and change cars on Kyrgyz side after which we will go over Kizil art pass (4336m) and continue to Yurt camp near Sary Mogul village in Kyrgyzstan. Overnight in Yurts. BLD


Day 9: Yurt camp - Osh

In the morning we drive to Osh 2-3 hrs, on arrival, we will have the opportunity to explore some of its sights, including Solomon’s Throne – the rock that looms over the city and is an important Muslim pilgrimage site. This Silk Road town is so old it celebrated its 3000th birthday a number of years ago. It is a place steeped in history and claims to have the best bazaar in all Central Asia – something we will check out.


Day 10: Osh - Chichkan

Today we drive to the Suusamyr Valley along the picturesque mountain Osh highway to the Chichkan gorge. Time permitting we take a walk in the area and meet the local shepherds who still adhere to age-old traditions. Overnight Hotel Osmon or similar. (BLD)


Day 11: Chichkan - Bishkek

Our last 280 km today will pass through the mountains of Kyrgyz ridge with various landscapes. The Tue-Ashyy pass (3586 m) affords a fantastic view of the Suusamyr valley. Night in Garden Hotel or similar

For a confirmed booking, a deposit of (10%) is required. Deposit is paid by credit card (secure payment via Stripe, no credit card fees). The remaining balance can be paid in cash upon start of the trip - unless Host & Traveler agree on different payment methods.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations can be made free of charge up to 30 days prior to the beginning of the booked service. The deposit (10%) is only refundable if the booking is canceled at least 30 days in advance.
