Dashoghuz – Darwaza – Ashgabat.Today we set off on a long 600km drive to Ashgabat. En route we stop at Fortess Yzmykshir, the famous Darwaza Crater, otherwise known as the ‘Gateway to Hell.’ This natural gas sinkhole was discovered by Soviet geologists in 1971 while drilling for natural gas. The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of 70 metres. To avoid poisonous gas discharge, it was decided that the best solution was to burn it off. Geologists had hoped that the fire would burn all the fuel in a matter of days, but the gas is still burning today. We will be provided with a lunch box as there are no other facilities to partake of a meal. After visiting the gas crater we continue the drive to Ashgabat, arriving in the evening. Accommodation: Ak Altyn Hotel.
