Vottovaara is one of the most mysterious places in Karelia. This mountain (total height 417 m above sea level) is really a unique geologic and geographic object. Here is an extraordinary landscape for Central Karelia: numerous huge boulders and “legged” stones, fantastic-formed trees, rocky rifts and small lakes. We offer to go hiking to Vottovaara as to:
- see “legged” stones, which some researchers consider cultic objects of the ancient Sami;
- find out what traces the ancient glacier left;
- trail the partisan unit that defended this area during the Great Patriotic War, and to learn why the neighboring hillside was called "Death-Mountain";
- climb to the highest point in central Karelia and enjoy incredible views.
