Echmiadzin Hripsime, Gayane, Mother Cathedral – Zvartnots – Garni – Geghard
Echmiadzin Mother Cathedral
The oldest Christian monastery in Armenia (and the world ) is the Cathedral of Etchmiadzin. Etchmiadzinn is the Armenian for “the descent of the only begotten”. Etchmiadzin Cathedral is the most ancient Christian temple in Armenia. Built-in 301-303 by King Trdat the Great and Grigor Lusavorich.
According to the legend on coming down to earth with a gold hammer and an image of a church appeared. On that spot St. Gregory built his cathedral which he called Etchmiadzin. The Holy See of St. Etchmiadzin is the center of the Armenian Apostolic Church. It is in the Ararat Valley which is called “the garden of Armenia”.
Etchmiadzin Cathedral is the mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church, located in the city of Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin), Armenia. According to scholars it was the first cathedral built in ancient Armenia and is considered the oldest cathedral in the world.
The cathedral was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.
The magnificent ruins of the temple of Zvartnots can be found about 2 km from Etchmiadzin. It is another architectural wonder which dates back to the 7th century AD. A severe earthquake destroyed it in the 10th century (in 930). It still impresses the onlooker by its amazing artistic splendor. Traces of heathen temple, Urartian inscriptions as well as a large wine press were found here.
Temple of Garni.
The complex includes several buildings, most famous of which are the 1st c. BC to Mythras (Helios), the VII-IX c.circular church, the palace with a throne room and a columned hall and the Roman bath-house. In the epoch of the Armenian rules of the Ervandids, Artashesids and Arshakids dynasties Garni was a summer residence of the kings and the place where their troops were stationed. 35 kilometers to the south of Yerevan is the Temple of Garni. The river Azat flows near it. The temple dates back to the 1st century AD. It was built by Trdat First and was dedicated to the God of sun Mihr. It is a pagan temple built in Hellenistic style. It is a rectangular construction surrounded by 24 columns. The temple was destroyed during the earthquake of 1679. Now it has been reconstructed.
Monastery of Geghard.
Lying 5 kilometers to the east of Garni in a deep canyon is the Geghard Monastery. It is a remarkable sample of the medieval Armenian architecture. The monastery was carved in the rocks. Geghard means “Monastery of the Spear, which originates from the spear that the Roman soldier stabbed Jesus Christ.” , or the true spear that pierced Christ’s side when he lay on the cross. And the monastery is one of only four places in the world claiming to have inherited the True Spear. The Word heritage site is impossible to describe- it should be seen.
