Mongolia Altai Trekking
One of the most attractive and unusual tour type here in Mongolia is Trekking. Following trekking adventure will take place in Western Mongolia specially in Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. In this remote corner where Mongolia, China, and Russia meet, we discover a beautiful swath of untouched wilderness. And you will have opportunity to feel real nomadic life & tradition during this epic journey. With Bactrian camels and powerful horses to carry our luggages and team staff , we camp by alpine lakes, hike to glaciers, explore ancient burial mounds and petroglyphs that are haunting testaments to Mongolia's shamanic traditions, and experience a pristine mountain world where Kazakh nomads still hunt with golden eagles.

Day 1: Fly from Ulaanbaatar to Ulgii & Altai Tavan Bogd National Park
Day 2: Tavan Bogd Massif ( 15km up to Base camp )
Day 3: Climb to Malchin peak(4050m)
Day 4: 15km down back to Tsagaan Gol Valley
Day 5: Hike to the Khar Airikh Valley
Day 6-7:Altai Mountains(3300m) crossing & Bear Valley
Day 8: To Green Lake
Day 9-10: Free day & Trek to Aral tolgoi

Day 1 Ulgii & Altai Tavan Bogd National Park
Catch an early flight to Ulgii, western province of Mongolia. After tour briefing we will drive 180km via the village of Ulaanhus over desert mountain landscapes (4-5hrs) and reach the road end. This is home place of Tuvan people, other small ethnic group in Mongolia. Here we will meet with the nomads who will supply horses and camels for our trek. Overnight in tent.
Day 2, Tavan Bogd massif ( Base camp )
Trek for the 16km towards the base camp of the snow-capped TavanBogd massif. We will pitch camp next to the 20km long Potanina glacier – the biggest of the twenty glaciers in Mongolian Altai – and remain there for two nights. TavanBogd means “the Holy Five” referring to the five highest peaks, of which Huiten Uul( Cold peak ) is the highest in Mongolia, 4374 meters above sea level.. The other peaks are: Nairamdal( Friendship ), Ulgii, Burged(Eagle) and Malchin(Nomad). Enjoy the gorgeous view of all of them during the sun set and sun rise.
Day 3, To the top of the Malchin peak
Today we will make a day hike to the Malchin peak(4050m). Malchin peak is the one of five peaks of the Tavan Bogd mountain on the Mongolia-Russian border. Non-technical climbing mountain. Breathtaking view from the top of the mountain.
Day 4, 15km down & Back to Tsagaan Gol Valley
Trek back to to the head of Tsagaan Gol( White River ) valley where Tuvan people spend their summer. Tuvans are shamans, and there are some tribe people who really practice shaman and they help sick people and do various shaman ceremonies. In the evening visit Tuvan family and get introduced to their culture, taste dairy products as well as milk vodka, which is distilled from the yogurt , made from yak milk. They also do wonderful felt crafts. Camp nearby the family.
Day 5, Hike to the Khar Airikh Valley
Hike to the Khar Airikh Valley via Shiveet Hairhan Uul( Carved Holly Mountain ) we will be able to see the biggest petroglyphs from the iron and bronze ages and Turkic invasions. There are about 400 Ibexes (Capra sibirica) on the top of the Shiveet Mountain. So, if we lucky we can see & capture some of them during the trek.
Day 6-7, Altai Mountain crossing
Today we will pass the Altai at the highest elevation( 3300m ). After crossing the Altai Mountain we enter to Bear Valley as local nomads used to call. We are now in a scenic area, where small streams develop into rives fed by the melting glaciers flowing down broad steppe valleys.
Day 8, To Green Lake
Trek down a valley with patches of Larch forests and reach the so called Green Lake( also called Heart lake ), where we pitch camp.
Day 9-10, Free day & Trek to Aral tolgoi
Today we will continue trekking downhill to the Aral Tolgoi ridge and meet with the vehicle team. We will overnight here in tents.
Day 11, Day with nomads
Today we will drive to a Kazakh nomadic family where we will organize a small nomadic ceremony by inviting all neighbors and slaughtering a sheep and have “ Five fingers” feast. Sing songs and enjoy your time with nomads.
Drive to Ulgii through Hurgan lake and Khovd river valley, stop by some deer stones and balbals (Turkic stone man). Stop by the Kazakh Eagle hunter family, get introduced with the eagle hunting traditions and skills. See the bird. Stay in ger camp nearby Ulgii and enjoy traditional Kazakh concert and beshbarmak which is traditional Kazakh meal.
Catch an early flight to Ulaanbaatar
Include: Domestic flights, hotel in Ulaanbaatar and Ulgii city, all the overnight Gers and tents, three meals a day, English speaking guide, cook, renting of riding horses or camels, support staff including drivers, all Border and National park permits. Possible to help with some visa problems.
Do not include: International transportation, travel insurance, visas, departure tax, alcoholic drinks, gratuities, items of a personal nature.
For a confirmed booking, a deposit of (10%) is required. Deposit is paid by credit card (secure payment via Stripe, no credit card fees). The remaining balance can be paid in cash upon start of the trip - unless Host & Traveler agree on different payment methods.
Cancellations can be made free of charge up to 30 days prior to the beginning of the booked service. The deposit (10%) is only refundable if the booking is canceled at least 30 days in advance.
