Lake Khuvsgul is known as the "Blue Peal of Mongolia" and "Mother Ocean" by the locals situated 2000 meters above sea level and located in the nothernmost province of Mongolia, Khuvsgul aimag. The lake remains frozen from January till late May and it becomes a temporary land route for transportation of goods over its icy cover. The Ice festival which attracts many spectators takes place there. This pristine lake untouched by industry pollution and modern urban life is so clear that one can see the underwater details and the fish very clearly. The lake holds 1.5 percent of world's fresh water reserve. Sereral ethnic groups live around the lake such as Darkhad, who retain their shamanic tradition, hardworking and industrious Buriats who inhabit the northern shore. The most famous are Dukha (also known as Tsaatan), reindeer herders who live in Gers that look similar to Native American teepees; their life revolves around reindeers and their migration routes. Sadly, this lifestyle is now being threatened by the encroachment of the modern world.
