10 Day Trekking Tour in the Altai, Western Mongolia

We'll take you on this amazing trek into the wilderness of Altai mountains and covers the Altai Tavan Bogd national park, one of the largest parks in Mongolia. The park is home to snow-capped mountains, glaciers, beautiful lakes, ancient archaeological sites and nomad Kazakh and Tuvan tribes as well as some endangered animals (such as snow leopard, wild sheep, ibex and Altai Snowcock). Day 1. Fly to Ulgii and lakes region of the NP

Catch early flight to Ulgii City. Welcomed by trip crew (guide, driver and cook). Drive to Khoton lake where our trekking tour begins. Arrive Khairakhty hill where you will meet our camel drivers who will support the trek with their camels. Overnight in tent on the shore of Khoton lake.

Day 2. The trek begins

Start the trek exploring ancient rock carvings on this hill. Landscape is stunning with towering forested mountains. The trek continues along the beautiful Khoton lake to Ak Su valley (white stream) to the west of the NP.

Day 3. Arrive at bear valley

Enjoy your time in this beautiful Altai mountains. Hike through the dramatic steppe valley with patches of larch forests along the white stream that drains from the Altai Tavan Bogd massif. On the way, you will view so called Green Lake and stay for the overnight in a scenic valley which is called the Bear valley.

Day 4. Cross the pass  

Cross the Altai at the highest elevation of some 3060m and here if we are in luck we might see big games such as bear, Ibex and wolf. After crossing the pass, you’ll trek down mountain valley of Khar Salaa where some local Tuvan families live. Tuvans are an ethnic group living nomadic life and practicing Shamanism. Overnight is in this valley.

Day 5. Gateway to Tavan Bogd Mount

You’ll head to Mongolia’s most attractive alpine mountains, Tava Bogd Mountains. Stop at Tsagan Gol (White River) valley, the gateway to the Tavan Bogd Mountains. Enjoy the unforgettable stay at Tsagan Gol! This stunning valley with impressive alpine panorama offers amazing views. Here Tuvan people spend their summer. Overnight.

Day 6. Hike into Tavan Bogd Mount

Continue the trek into a world of snow and glacier. Enjoy extraordinary view of Mongolian highest mountains and glaciers. You’ll pitch camp at the base camp on the edge of  12km Potanin glacier.

 Day 7. Climb Malchin Peak (4020m)

Early morning hike to climb the Malchin Peak which is the lowest of the five peaks and non-technical. At the top a spectacular view over the Potanin glacier and high alpine panorama await you. Descend in the late afternoon for your hike back to the base camp. Overnight is at the base camp.

Day 8. Hike back to the Tsagaan Gol valley

Hike back to Tsagaan Gol valley and have time to enjoy short horseback hike to small crystal clear blue lake on a neighboring hill and view the landscape around the lake. Overnight.

Day 9. Drive to Ulgii

On the way back to Ulgii, stop by a Eagle Hunter’s family to see and photograph his majestic bird. In the evening we’ll gather for a farewell dinner.

Day 10. Fly back to ULN

We will transfer you to the airport. Fly back to Ulaanbatar. (B)

For a confirmed booking, a deposit of (10%) is required. Deposit is paid by credit card (secure payment via Stripe, no credit card fees). The remaining balance can be paid in cash upon start of the trip - unless Host & Traveler agree on different payment methods.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations can be made free of charge up to 30 days prior to the beginning of the booked service. The deposit (10%) is only refundable if the booking is canceled at least 30 days in advance.
