Shyam Valley Trek

The Sham Valley Trek allows one to acquaint himself with the simple life of the Indo-Tibetans – cuisine, rituals, festivals, and hospitality. The trek trail passes through the serene hamlets of Hemis Shukpachen, Ridzong, Temisgang and Ang and offers trekkers a stay at local houses that are appointed for village homestay to experience the unique Indo-Tibetan culture. Enclosed within the barren hillocks, these villages spray traditional essence leaving one to step into a blissful world.

Day 01: Arrival in Delhi airport

Arrival at the international airport in Delhi at night and board morning flight to Leh. 

 Day 02: Delhi - Leh by flight 

 In the early morning board the flight to Leh, the plane flies over the Himalayan Range providing amazing overhead view of the whole mountain range with gigantic glaciers and glaring peaks before it brings us to Leh, a fertile valley just to the north of the mighty Indus River (this flight is subject to appropriate weather and perfect flying conditions). Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel.

Late afternoon enjoys an orientation walk in Leh and its bazaars. In the olden days, Leh was an important trading center along the old Silk Route from China. The town is dominated by the nine-story Namgyal Palace whose faded grandeur has been likened to a mini version of the Potala Palace in Lhasa.

 Day 03: Leh Sightseeing 

 Today, sightseeing tour visit to Thikse Monastery that belongs to Gelukpa order (Yellow Hat). Perched on top of a hill its red and white buildings can be seen from miles. 

 Hemis Gompa that belongs to Drukpa order (Red Hat). It holds the distinction not only of being the biggest and the wealthiest monastery of Ladakh but also of very rich collections of ancient relics and the rare 17th-century murals and the painted stone reliefs adorning the courtyard gallery making it a true UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Later visit Matho monastery situated right across Thikse on the other side of Indus River. This monastery was founded in the 16th century and it's an only monastery that belongs to Sakya order of Tibetan Monastery.

 Day 04: Leh - Taroo

This morning sightseeing program across the river to the south of Leh lies Stok, a village in which the deposed royal family relocated after the loss of their throne. Stok Palace, where the royal family now lives, houses a museum of artifacts associated with this dynasty. Later visit Shanti Stupa on the hilltop at Changspa. An exhausting steep uphill walk over the steps to the Stupa culminates in great views of the valley around and of the road to Khardung La - world’s highest motorable pass at 5,602 meters.

After that, we drive to a small village called Taru, the starting point of our trek.

 Day 05: Taroo - Nimmoo

Today, our walk in a deserted valley with a gradual ascent towards the first pass, Taru La (4,200m). The trail gets steeper just before reaching the pass see the breathtaking views from the top. It’s then a long but gradual descent on a dusty trail to the village of Umla. Then we cross this beautiful village before arriving on a deserted plateau where we stop for lunch. Later we continue towards Nimu village through an unpopulated landscape.

 Distance: 17 Kms

Day 06: Nimmoo - Ney

This morning we have just short day’s trek with a gradual ascent for an hour through a canyon that is surrounded by rocky cliffs. From the top one can enjoy sweeping views over the green fields of Nimu and Indus River. We trek onto a deserted plateau to reach the green valley of Nye. Afternoon explores this beautiful village.

 Day 07: Nye – Likir (3,400m)

This morning after breakfast we reach an arid and bare landscape. From here it’s a gentle walk up to the village of Likir. After taking some rest at the camp we visit Likir Monastery and explore this beautiful village.

 Duration of Trek: 4 Hrs

 Distance: 12 Kms

 Day 08: Likir - Yangthang

 Today, our trek to Yangtang via a small village of Sumdo (2-3 houses only), a gateway to beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. We cross the small pass of Charatse La (3,700 m) to reach Yangtang. We reach our camp set up either near the village school or at the river bank.

 Duration of Trek: 4 Hrs (approximate) 

 Distance: 14 Kms

 Day 09: Yangtang – Rizong – Hemis Shukpachan (3,600m)

The morning after breakfast we get off along the river that we may have to cross several times (sandals required). We walk in the shade of trees up to the Monastery of Rizong. The monastery holds special significance for Tibetan Buddhists as it belongs to Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. After that, we continue our trek to cross Nigutse La (3,950m) and then get off to the village called Hemis.

 Duration of Trek: 6 Hrs (approximate) 

 Distance: 20 Kms

 Day 10: Hemis Shukpachan – Ang – Themisgam (3,600m)

Today, depart from Hemis and we reach Rongtil La - an almost flat walk to the chorten marking the pass. After a short steep gets off to the base, Meptek La looks like a wall in front - but it can be climbed in half an hour by a slow leisurely walk. A 90-minute gradual descent through the village of Ang brings us to a prosperous village & then we visit a castle in Themisgam

 Distance: 13 Kms

 Day 11: Themisgam – Khalsi – Lamayuru – Leh

This morning after breakfast our trek starts with a flat walk on a metalled road for about 30 minutes before we start ascending to Bong Bong La (3,650m). After that, we walk through the breathtaking canyons and enjoy views of pastel-colored mountains with snow-covered peaks. It’s an easy descent to the road-head at Khalsi where we finish our trek. Later then drive to Lamayuru. 

In the afternoon we visit Lamayuru monastery, one of the largest and oldest monasteries in Ladakh.

Day 12: Leh - Delhi by flight 

This morning transfer to Leh airport to board the flight for Delhi. Upon arrival in Delhi airport transfer to the international airport to board the flight to back home.
