Nomadic adventures and community service tour in south Gobi

Highlights: Visit the Yol Canyon the home of Lammergeier, the highest sand dune of Mongolia Khongor Sand Dune (800m), Bayan Zag flaming cliffs, learning from the Gobi nomadic tradition and culture, sleep in Mongolian Ger, discovering the Dinosaur fossils, riding Bactrian camel and visit to the Buddhist temple and Rock paint.

Accommodation: Ger camp or Guest House Ger. Ger (yurt) is a Mongolian traditional dwelling and made with wooden frames and linen layers on the ceiling. Ger camp has about 30 gers for guests, and restaurant, bathroom facilities are located separately, it’s about 10 m (30 foot) from the actual ger that you stay. Each individual ger has a stove in the center to keep the ger warm, and a small table, chairs, beds with mattresses and extra blankets. 3 Nights at the ger camp, 1 night in the ger, 2 nights at the hotel.

 Day by day itinerary: 

Day 1: Welcome to our beautiful country and arrive in Ulaanbaatar city                                                                      Our guide and driver will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. Once there, you may stay in the hotel and get some rest.
Accommodation: Hotel (Puma, Springs or similar 4-star hotel)

Day 2: Ulaanbaatar to South Gobi Province Airport and drive to Flaming Cliffs by 4 WD                                                 Our driver will pick you up from the hotel and take you to the airport, where you will fly to the Dalanzadgad airport in South-Gobi Province. Here the adventure starts. First, we will visit the museum of a Bactrian camel in the town there you will see geological findings and wild animal taxidermies of Mongolian Gobi Desert. Then we drive to Bayanzag, the Flaming Cliffs by 4WD about 100km (about 62miles). In the afternoon arrive at the ger camp and walk around the Flaming Cliffs and visit the Saxaul Tree forest. You will enjoy the sightseeing of each destination and provide a spectacular photo opportunity to view the amazing beauty of the Gobi Desert.

Day 3 and 4: Community service with a nomadic family (90 km)                                                                                               After breakfast we will drive to the west and stay with a local family for 2 days. We will visit the community water well, which is a gathering place for both families and herds. We will do a small community service project that will provide an opportunity to build friendships with local nomads. Nomadic people have to do lots of preparation for the harsh winter during the summer so we could help them to make mini vests for baby sheep and goats with pre-purchased fabrics brought from Ulaanbaatar. Also during the stay, we can learn how to help them prepare traditional dairy products for their children. We will also bring cake molds to make dried curds. Because local children go to town, and live in a dorm during the whole school season families prepare and send dried and preserved food for the children. By participating in these community activities you will appreciate the exciting experience of the authentic nomadic lifestyle.

Day 5: Meditation Monastery and Camel riding in Khongor Sand Dune by 4 WD                                                                     After having a farewell with the family we will drive 160 km (about 100 miles) to the Khongor Sand Dunes. On the way, we will stop by ancient Meditation monastery where you may find your very own peace and release from stress. The monastery was restored recently by the initiative of a grandson of a famous monk who used to live and meditate there. We will learn beautiful stories about how local people worship, support, and maintain the monastery. Dinner will be served and after dinner, we will ride a camel for an hour.

Day 6: Morning Hike to Khongor Sand Dune and Yol Canyon by 4 WD                                                                          In the early morning drive about 2km (1.2 miles) to the sand dunes where we will hike about 195m (639ft) high sandhills. This sandhill is called “Singing dunes” by locals. We will hear the sound from the sands and learn why it is called “Singing dunes”. This will be worth to climb up to the top and makes you feel you are on the space. After lunch, we will drive about 250 km (155 miles) to the Yol Canyon. At the site, we’ll visit the local museum to see Gobi wild animal’s taxidermies and dinosaur fossils found from South Gobi. Yol Canyon is a deep and narrow gorge and the valley is named after the Lammergeier, which is called Yol in Mongolian. The Lammergeier is a vulture; so, the name is often translated to Valley of the Vultures or Valley of the Eagles.

Day 7: Fly back to the Ulaanbaatar City                                After breakfast, we will drive to Dalanzadgad and fly back to Ulaanbaatar and transfer to the hotel. In the afternoon we will go shopping and watch a traditional Mongolian concert. Afterward, we will have a farewell dinner in a restaurant in town.

Day 8: Departure from Mongolia                                                 After you check out of your hotel, we will transfer you to the “Chinggis Khan” International airport for departure.

For a confirmed booking, a deposit of (10%) is required. Deposit is paid by credit card (secure payment via Stripe, no credit card fees). The remaining balance can be paid in cash upon start of the trip - unless Host & Traveler agree on different payment methods.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations can be made free of charge up to 30 days prior to the beginning of the booked service. The deposit (10%) is only refundable if the booking is canceled at least 30 days in advance.
