Mongolian Winter Photo tour

Mongolia is a country of the sun with average more than 250 sunny days. Winter is the most dry season with a clear sky, beautiful light ambiance. Find the extraordinary photography opportunities of Mongolia’s silver and quiet season, during the peaceful winter when nature and animals are dressed in white winter. Central Mongolia with its forested mountains, snow-covered hills, roaming herds of horse and sheep, offers a nature photographer’s some great chances to get its best shot: Fluffy camels, their wool coats rimmed in frost, nostrils creating steam clouds in the frozen air. Horseman in thick wool deel riding on a tough-looking horse and chasing the herd on snow hills. In the remote reaches of the mountain range, we search for wolves, foxes and other animals hoping to silently photograph the wild animals as they move through the snow in the distance. This all-inclusive nature and cultural adventure promise exclusive experience for you! 

Accommodation: International 5 star chain hotel in Ulaanbaatar and log house hotel is reserved for you. Comfortable luxury or standard twin/double rooms, shower and toilettes, guest lobby, dining hall, meeting room are provided. Out of Ulaanbaatar to the East-north 110 km and located in the forest mountain. Optional Ger (yurt) stay is available.

Highlights: One of the Northern Mongolian proud landscape is forest mountains and hills with wildlife including deer, wolf, fox, rabbit, etc…. Even it is close to the capital town there are many nomadic herders who kept their traditional style and herding sheep. Goat, horse, cow, and camels. We learn their secret of surviving skill during the trip. City tour with main and historical sides from the 19th century and soviet regime including museums and popular shopping places. New Milestone has over 10 years of experience working with photographers and filmmakers in the country and remote places for cultural, wildlife and research expeditions. The group will consist of not more than 6 people and we will split into 2 SUV vehicles. It allows the convenience of photographing for everyone to have a window side and traveling with fewer people also allows us to move quickly to areas where wildlife’s have been spotted and to observe them without disturbing them. This tour is designed for sustainable tourism in another term we support community. Each tour provides support to the local community to earn an income by supporting our photography trip by serving food, herding animals for the best photographing position, and giving us short fun horseback activities and so on. Also, our company uses 5% of the total payments to local community children education support by donating school kits, warm clothes and other necessary needs for going to school.

Equipment: We do not provide photography gears. Toyota Land Cruiser will be our ride to the mountain and nomads legendary place.

Weather: Average temperature in December 2015 and January 2016 during the day will be -12* -16* Celsius and during the night -20* -25* Celsius.

Day by Day itinerary

Day 1: Arrival day

Our guide and driver will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. Once there, you may stay in the hotel and get some rest. Our tour guide will give you a brief orientation. Welcome to our beautiful country!

Day2: Ulaanbaatar-Jargalant                                                     

After breakfast, we will leave Ulaanbaatar and head to the Northwest region of the central province. On the road, we will see herds of domestic animals in the steppe. Whenever we need to stop we may pull over along the side road and photograph. It is a paved road and no rush driving. In about 2 hours driving we will reach the mountain cottage hotel and get introduced to the area. After lunch, we will take a walk up to the hill and find the spot for scenery photo. Plan the schedule for evening or sunset photo. Visit local nomad family with camels, which is unusual because most of the camels live in southern Mongolia where the Gobi is. After the evening photo session, we will have dinner in the dining hall and retire.

Day 3: Nomadic family                                                             

After breakfast, we will drive downhill and visit local family herding sheep, horses and cows. We will learn from local customs and generate a warm atmosphere with our host family. And we will start our photography sessions with horses, horseman, and children. We can try local cuisine & witness its preparation. This is a full day to enjoy & share local family habits and get a high chance to get exclusive photos of winter nomadic lifestyle. In the evening with own flexible schedule, we will ride back to lodge. Dinner and retire. Return to the lodge and rest.

Day 4: Wildlife of Mongolia                                                                                                                                                            Today we leave early morning according to the local herders’ advice to track wildlife. If we are lucky we might hear or observe a wolf or fox. We’ll gets amazing photos opportunities of beautiful snow-covered mountains, trees, and other wildlife. We will drive up to the hills and around the mountains for the best scenery and beautiful winter life photography. Return to the lodge and rest.

Day 5: Ulaanbaatar City tour and Historical day                     

In the morning drive about 2 hours to Ulaanbaatar and come to the hotel. Today we will visit the Gandan Monastery, the biggest Buddhist Monastery of Mongolia and walk on the main square for urban images. We will drive to a WW ll memorial situated on top of the hill, offering a panoramic view of Ulaanbaatar. After the visit of Mongolian’s last King’s home museum, we will have a lunch. In the afternoon, we can enjoy some free time or continue the visit through famous cashmere brand “Gobi� factory store, the State Department Store and if time the Hunnu Mall. In the evening we will have a farewell dinner and go back to the hotel.

Day 6: Departure day                                                                 

Our driver will pick you up from the hotel and transfer you to the Chinggis International Airport.

For a confirmed booking, a deposit of (10%) is required. Deposit is paid by credit card (secure payment via Stripe, no credit card fees). The remaining balance can be paid in cash upon start of the trip - unless Host & Traveler agree on different payment methods.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations can be made free of charge up to 30 days prior to the beginning of the booked service. The deposit (10%) is only refundable if the booking is canceled at least 30 days in advance.
