The West recalls only what he conquered, but Mongolians remember what he created. His empire connected East and West, allowing the Silk Road to flourish. His rule enshrined the concepts of diplomatic immunity and religious freedom. He established a reliable postal service and the use of paper money. Genghis Khan didn’t just conquer the world, he civilized it. You will experience the Great Genghis Khan homeland and Mongolian nomadic culture by visiting local families and a fascinating rural lifestyle. Unique beautiful Mongolian vast steppes (Menen) and dormant volcanoes in Dariganga & Shiliin Bogd (worshipped mountains). Eastern Mongolia’s largest lake Buir and famous Khalkha River.

Full itinerary

Day1. Blue Lake of Blue Heart

In the morning, our guide and driver will pick up from your hotel or guesthouse and start our tour. We leave the city before we will pass some shops. After shops directly driving towards to Blue lake of Black Heart. Lunch served on the way. This lake is situated near Tsenkher River 35 km north from the main road in the eastern region and northwest from Tsenkher Mandal Soum, Khentii Aimag (Genghis Khan city). The full name of the lake is the Blue Lake of Black Heart. Black Heart is the pointed topped mountain on the north side of the lake. A fresh watered Lake Khukh which consists of 2 lakes, linked underground, is located the south of Mount Khar Zurkh 1675 m above sea level. The area around the lake is a place of natural beauty surrounded by a mountain and is abundant of various species of animal and vegetation. You can go hiking around. Overnight is Ger guesthouse. Day2. Baldan Bereeven monastery

After breakfast, we will drive to (off-road) Baldan Bereeven monastery. Lunch served on the way. This monastery first established in 1654, the monastery grew to be one of the largest and most important in Mongolia at its h in the mid 19th century, housing up to 8000 monks. The monastery and temple complex was destroyed by Mongolia’s communist regime in 1937, today three temples have been restored and grounds include the remains of nearly 50 temples, stupas, and other religious edifices. You will visit the monastery and hiking around. After returning to the vehicle, head to tonight Ger guesthouse /nomad family/. B+L+D

Day3. Uglugchiin Kherem

After breakfast, we will head to (off-road) Kherlen River. Lunch served on the way. Uglugchiin Kherem has located 45 km in south-west of the Batshireet soum center of Khentii aimag and 8-10 km from the delta of Bayan River and Uglugchiin River. It lies in a valley of Daichin Mountain and was built with skillfully piled stones without any clays and mud. It is about three kilometers long and it has two entrances, the south and north sides. There is a small soil dam remainder inside and the piling of this wall can be clearly seen from its south-east and south sides. Other parts became too difficult to distinguish from the earth. The h of the wall was 2.5-4.5 meters when a Soviet archeologist S. Kondratiev measured in 1926, but its highest point is 3.1 meters and 2, 5 meters wide now. A tall rock inside the wall is called as “Horse handle of Genghis Khan” by local people. You can go short hiking around. After returning to the vehicle, head to tonight’s Ger guesthouse. B+L+D

Day4-5. Deluun Boldog

After breakfast, we will drive to “Homeland of Genghis Khan” Deluun Boldog. 1206 the Great Mongol Empire was established and Temuujin was declared Genghis Khan which means “Great Khaan”. There are two monuments dedicated to Genghis Khan. One is a large rock in Deluun Boldog with an inscription in old Mongol script marking “If my body dies, let my body die, but do not let my country die”, the birthplace of the Great Khan. The other monument was inaugurated in 1962 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Genghis Khan’s birth. In a boundary zone of steppe and taiga some 3.5 km north of Dadal village, you'll find a grouping of rounded hills and shallow gullies intercut with clear mountain streams known as Deluun Boldog. On top of one of the hills is a stone marker, erected in 1990 to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the writing of “The Secret History of the Mongols”. There is a monument decorated Genghis Khan’s portrait bank of Gurvan Nuur (Three Lakes). Nowadays Dadal is the most important destination in East Mongolia as well as discovering the wild nature hiking around “Onon Balj”. Overnight Ger guesthouse. B+L+D

Day6. balsan city

After breakfast, we will drive to (off-road) balsan city. balsan city is located in the east of the country, 655 km away from the national capital Ulaanbaatar. Lunch served on the way. The city covers an area of 28.3 thousand hectares and stretching over 20 km. In 2009, in honor of the 70th anniversary of Victory in Khalkhin Gol by the Mongolian presidential decree, balsan city was awarded the “Medal of Military Power”. At the national level balsan city in 2006 was awarded the title “Creative City”, and in 2010 the best “Green City”, Presently, the population of the balsan is over 41.0 thousand. Upon arrival visit to the museum and having dinner in a restaurant. Overnight hotel. B+L+D

Day7. Menen steppe

After breakfast, our next destination is an (off-road) Menen steppe known as well Menengiin Tal. Lunch served on the way. Menen Steppe an endless plain steppe with over 90 km long and over 60 km wide, located in Dornod, Eastern province. This is the big steppe in the world which has kept its native land and there are plenty of pasture plants, antelopes, wolves as well as rare animals. Usually, Mongolian antelopes graze and hundreds of them flock and pass winter here. You can see the beauty of the steppe where the perennial, nutritious and segmented grass swings in the Menen steppe. Overnight tent. B+L+D

Day8. Buir Lake

After breakfast, we will drive to (off-road) Buir Lake. Lunch served on the way. Buir lake is the biggest lake on the Mongolian steppe and belongs to the surrounding zone of East Mongolian Strictly Protected Area. 65 km west from Khalkh Gol soum center. It is a tectonic lake, but for shore type, it belongs to steppe lakes. The longest is 40 km from north-east to south wast and widest is 40 km. The shoreline is 118 km long and considered Mongolian fifth biggest lake with 6m average depth. The junction area of Khalkh Gol River and Buir Lake is very beautiful because it has many swamps, reeds and wicker groves where many migratory birds gather for nesting and laying eggs. Buir Lake totally freezes in November with 1-1.5m thickness. Overnight shore Buir lake a tourist camp. B+L+D

Day9. Khalkha & Numrug Rivers

After breakfast, our next destination is a Khalkha & Numrug Protected National Park. The Khalkh and Numrug rivers rise from Khayngan Range on the boundary between China and Mongolia. Numrug rivers flow into Khalkha river. Steppe animals belong to Manjuur and Daguur Mongolia mostly spread in the basin. 487 species of plants have been found here, among them, 10 species of plants grow only in Central Asia. Many rare animals like moose, deer, atters, bears, roe deer, boars and bustards are here. 263 species of birds have found here and 5 of them are registered in Mongolian Red Book. Khalkha river begins from a 1720 m altitude of khyangan Range in China and flows into Buir lake. Khyangan Range is in rich of plants and surface water. Overnight Ger guesthouse. B+L+D

Day10. Ikh Burkhant National Park

After breakfast, keep going to see Ikh Burkhant Protected National park. The site called Ikh Burkhant is located on the Western bank of the Khalkha River, 35 km (21.75 miles) North the sum of Khalkha, in the province of Dornod, in the extreme East of country. On this site, you can see many statues of Buddhist gods, among which the huge one, sculpted right on the hill, of Janraisag, “Avalokitesvara” in Sanskrit, protective God represented with the legs apart. The statue is 30 meters (98,43 feet) long, and 1 to 3 meters (3,28-9,84 meters) deep in the rock. It was made with stones carried by 1000 carts pulled by bullocks and 180 craftsmen were required to work on it. You can go short hiking around. After returning to the vehicle, head to tonight’s Ger guesthouse. B+L+D

Day11. Altan Ovoo & Shiliin Bogd dormant volcanoes

After breakfast, we will head to (off-road) Altan Ovoo. Lunch served on the way. Altan Ovoo located the north of Dariganga soum of Sukhbaatar province started to be officially worshiped since 1913. Altan ovoo dormant volcano became State Worshiped Mountain in 2004 according to the Mongolian president’s decree. Local people have a custom of worshiping it every year.

Shiliin Bogd: Shiliin Bogd is the head mountain of more than 220 dormant volcanoes in Dariganga, and is located 60 km away to the south-east of Dariganga soum center. This mountain has been worshiped and people come here and see the rising sun on the top of the mountain in the coldest period of winter. This mountain has been protected since 2004. Day12. Taliin Agui

After breakfast, we will head to (off-road) Taliin Cave. Lunch served on the way. The cave volume is more than 10000m2. It is one of the biggest caves with volcanic mountain’s origin known in Mongolia. The general form of the cave is a torus. The cave is the most beautiful one among many caves known in Mongolia. As you enter into the cave you immediately fall into water and mud, therefore you should enter carefully. 3-4m from cave entrance the tunnel goes down around 20m and the tunnel h is more than 10m. Day13. Baruun Urt city

After breakfast, we will head to (off-road) Baruun Urt city. Lunch served on the way. From Ulaanbaatar to Baruun Urt city distance 560 km. Upon arrive we will visit the local museum. Overnight hotel. B+L+D

Day14. Genghis Khan city

After breakfast, we will head to Genghis Khan city. Lunch served on the way. Undurkhaan is a town in Mongolian located 290 km east of Ulaanbaatar. The Mongolian Parliament, State Great Khural, renamed the city Genghis Khan city on November 18, 2013, in honor of Genghis Khan, who was born and possibly buried in the same province north of the city. Genghis Khan city has a population of roughly 15000 persons and serves as the capital of the Khentii Aimag. Upon arrive city visit to the museum. Overnight hotel. B+L+D

Day15. Gun Galuut National Park

After breakfast, we will continue to drive to Gun Galuut Nature Reserve, where it is harmonized complex of high mountains, steppes, rivers, lakes, and wetlands as well are kept enough as its original condition. We will have lunch, afterward will arrive nomad family rest of the day is free time for you, relaxing, walking, wildlife viewing. Overnight in Ger guesthouse /nomad family/. Tonight special dinner (Khorkhog is a barbecue dish in Mongolian cuisine). B+L+D

Day16. Ulaanbaatar & Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue

After breakfast, we will head to Ulaanbaatar. On the way visit “Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue ” which is currently the biggest (40m high) equestrian statue in the world. There is a recreation area, restaurants, and souvenir shops occupy the base structure. From here, you can ascend to the head of the horse using an elevator. There you have a good panoramic view of the complex area and the scenery beyond. Have lunch and then continue for 45 km to the Ulaanbaatar. In the evening we will attend the amazing performance (18:00 pm) of Mongolian traditional music and dance. Overnight hotel or guesthouse. B+L

Accommodation: During your countryside stay we provide Ger guesthouse accommodations, most of the guesthouse supply the Mongolian traditional dwelling Ger as guest’s accommodation. Normally, 4 or 5 beds are in one Ger. Ger guesthouse means: Some nomadic people who live within the national park area have their own small business for Ger accommodation for backpackers. Staying there gives you a chance to get closely acquainted with the way of life and culture of the Mongolian people.

● some of the local guesthouses offers food service for their customers. Usually, serve Mongolian meals and Russian styled meals. 

● shower & toilet most of the local Ger guesthouse do not have formal toilets.

● electricity: There is no electricity at some local ger guesthouses specially located far away from the village or town.

Meals: During your travels with us, guides for cooking you. Most of the Mongolian traditional meal is based on meat, choices of beef, mutton, goat, chicken and, even vegetables. So, please let us know if you have a special request (vegan). It is also available to have and taste traditional dairy products when you visit nomad families. Someday will be picnic lunch as well as on the way we will pass local restaurants or cuisine.

Transportation: In the countryside, we mostly use Russian minivan, Japanese or Korean minivans as well as Japanese Jeeps.

For a confirmed booking, a deposit of (10%) is required. Deposit is paid by credit card (secure payment via Stripe, no credit card fees). The remaining balance can be paid in cash upon start of the trip - unless Host & Traveler agree on different payment methods.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations can be made free of charge up to 30 days prior to the beginning of the booked service. The deposit (10%) is only refundable if the booking is canceled at least 30 days in advance.
