One day trip for 4 pax
Charyn Canyon (The Valley of Castles) is located in the Charyn National Park, approximately 215km east of Almaty. The canyon is often called the Grand Canyon of the East! The canyon spans a distance of 150km and can reach depths of 300m. The canyon’s formation began as the surrounding area rose over a period of 3 million years. The geological shift caused an existing lake to begin to drain and slowly erode the canyon. This phenomenon, paired with the erosion caused by the Charyn River left us with the towering columns and deep valley we can explore today!
The drive to Charyn Canyon allows travelers to see how the different ways inhabitants across Kazakhstan live. During the drive, we will take ample breaks; your comfort is our priority. Mid-way to Charyn Canyon we will stop to purchase lunch at an authentic Kazakh bazaar, off the beaten track and known only to locals. During our drive you will see the rolling steppes typical for this region of Kazakhstan and we will drive through Kokpek pass. Charyn Canyon is approximately a 3 hour drive (one-way) from Almaty. Once we arrive at the canyon we will follow a hiking trail that leads into the base of the canyon. The hiking trail is approximately 3km each way.
