This excellent circuit trek gives you a great opportunity to explore three large gorges in Trans-Ili Alatau region - Big Almaty, Left Talgar and Middle Talgar gorges. We will start from stunning Big Almaty Lake and then continue by exploring pristine valleys of Left Talgar and Middle Talgar gorges. We'll climb to the foot of Talgar peak (5017m a.s.l), the highest point of Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, and then visit the highest mountain climbing camp in the former Soviet Union, destroyed by the mudflow.

Itinerary: Almaty – Big Almaty lake (2511m) – Kyzylsai river gorge – Tourists pass (3930m) – Left Talgar river gorge – “Sunny meadow” (2800m) – Nauruksay River gorge – North TEU pass (3900m) – Middle Talgar River gorge – Talgar Mountaineering Camp (2500m) – Almaty.
Day 1. Almaty – Big Almaty lake (2511m) – Camp by Kyzylsai river (2900m) 2-3 hrs.
Firstly, we make an early short trip to Big Almaty lake, surrounded by mountain peaks (2511m), and that would be a starting point of our trek. The trailhead lies along a dirt road along Ozernaya river till its confluence with Kyzylsai river. We set up our camp and stay there overnight, at the altitude of 2900m. Dinner.
Day 2. Tourists pass (3930m) – Left Talgar gorge – “Sunny meadow” (2800m) 6-7 hrs.
After breakfast, we hike along Kyzylsai river. Rocky peaks rising on the both sides of the gorge, and we can enjoy an incredible panoramic view of icy cap of Molodaya Gvardiya peak (4394m). The path leads us to Tourists pass at the altitude of 3930m, above the snow line. Then we descend from the pass along the edge of a glacier towards one of the most beautiful valleys of Trans-Ili Alatau – Left Talgar river valley. We set up our camp on the Sunny meadow (2800m). Dinner.
Day 3. Day in Left Talgar gorge.
On this day we will get some sleep and rest. We will make a radial hike to the Toguzak gorge.
Day 4. Left Talgar River gorge (2200m) – Nauruksay River gorge (2200 – 2900m). 4-5 hours.
We continue our trek after the breakfast. After crossing Left Talgar River on logs we move towards Nauruksay, a deserted and extremely beautiful gorge. Then we ascend to 2900m, and camp for the second night on an ancient grassed moraine.
Day 5. Nauruksay River gorge (2900m) – North TEU pass (3900m) – Middle Talgar River gorge (overnight at 2600-2900m). 5-6 hours.
Today’s plan is to hike from Left Talgar to Middle Talgar by crossing over TEU pass. We follow the trail leading to the foot of the pass and then ascend the moraine and scree slope. During the walk there are superb panoramic views of Talgar summits. We descend from the pass towards Middle Talgar River. After crossing it we establish our camp on the campsite.
Day 6. Day in Middle Talgar.
On this day we will get some sleep and rest. We will make a radial hike to the step of Talgar peak.
Day 7. Camping in the riverhead of Middle Talgar – “Talgar” Mountaineering Camp (2500m). 3-4 hours.
Today we walk down all the way along the river till the famous Talgar Mountaineering Camp. The camp is located on 2500m, and it used to be the highest mountaineering camp in USSR. It could be reached by foot only, following a picturesque trail. Unfortunately it had been destroyed by the landslide in 1978 and then shut down. The campsite has a beautiful location with stunning view and nature, so we stay here for the last night.
Day 8. Talgar Mountaineering Camp (2500m) – Nature reserve cordon – Almaty. 4-5 hours.
Today we walk down along the trail from the mountaineering camp. As we reach the cordon we will be driven back to Almaty.

For a confirmed booking, a deposit of (10%) is required. Deposit is paid by credit card (secure payment via Stripe, no credit card fees). The remaining balance can be paid in cash upon start of the trip - unless Host & Traveler agree on different payment methods.
Cancellations can be made free of charge up to 30 days prior to the beginning of the booked service. The deposit (10%) is only refundable if the booking is canceled at least 30 days in advance.
