ROUTE: UZ/TJ BDR - PANJAKENT - 7 LAKES - PANJAKENT - ISKANDARKUL - DUSHANBE
The following itinerary is quite suitable for those who are entering Tajikistan after visiting Samarqand in neighboring Uzbekistan.and are heading toward the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe.
According to our observation, five-six days are more than enough for you to open for yourself one of the most ancient Tajik cities, Panjakent and see the magnificent lakes in the Fann Mountains of the Zerafshan Valley. This destination among foreign visitors is considered to be the most demanded in the Northern part of Tajikistan.
Day 1: Panjakent - ARRIVAL (Overnight Stay in a Hostel)
Since the border control procedure is not the easiest and shortest process for everyone be it a foreigner of a local, we will likely pick you up in the border with Uzbekistan by noon. You will be taken by our team to a hotel in Panjakent where you will have enough time for rest and for getting prepared for conquering the 7 Lakes which is our first visiting destination.
Close to the evening when you will be more or less recover after your Uzbek adventure, we will have an opportunity to meet with locals and get a little familiar with Panjakent.
Day 2: 7 Lakes (Overnight Stay in a Homestay)
The second day early in the morning we will pick you up from your hotel and will start our drive to the 7 Lakes, the diamonds and visiting cards of North and Tajikistan as a whole.
It will take us an estimated 1h 30min to get to the first lake by a 4 wheel drive. We will have time to stop in every lake for taking pictures and enjoying the beauty of the surroundings. After another 1h 30 min (considering stops) we will be at the 6th lake. Since driving to the last lake is challenging and risky, the best way for conquering this part is hiking. This will take us approximately an extra 1 hour (both ways). The night will be spent in a homestay. Camping is possible as well!!!
Day 3: Panjakent (Overnight in a Hostel)
By 08:00 AM the next day after our adventure at the 7 lakes, we will be back in Panjikent, the most ancient city of modern Tajikistan.
The city with more than twelve centuries of history served to be as one of the most cosmopolitan and high cultural centers of Sogdians with its unique architecture, craft, bazars, wooden and clay statues. Its rich heritage very often makes foreign visitors and scholars associate this remarcable city with Pompei.
DURING THE DAY WE WILL GO THROUGH THE FOLLOWING SITES: Ancient Panjakent (V-Century), Rudaki Museum, Rudaki Cultural Complex, Mazori Sharif (VIII-Century)(meaning noble shrine), Olim Dodkhon Complex (XIV-Century), Loiq Sherali Statue, Ancient Panjakent Museum, Bazar, Lenin Statue, Somoni Statue.
Day 4: Iskandarkul - Dushanbe (Overnight Stay in a Hotel/Hostel)
On the morning of the 4th day, we will drive to the Iskandarkul Lake, a must-visit site without which your adventure in Tajikistan will be incomplete.
Iskandarkul (Iskandar- Aleksander, Kul - lake) or the Aleksander Lake. According to legend yet during the conquest of Persia, Aleksander the Great faced one of the most brutal resistances from Sogdians and Bactrians who were then under the jurisdiction of the Persian Ahimenid Dynasty. This made Aleksander and his troops use the Iskandarkul basin as a stop on their way to the Fergana Valley. In the end, despite all sorts of resistance, Aleksander was lucky to break the lines and occupied the above-mentioned territories.
It will take us estimated 3-4 hours to get to Iskandarkul which means we will be there by noon. We will have lunch in a Cafe next to the shore. After you will have time to take pictures, arrange barbeque, sunbathe up on a terrace, etc. Although swimming is banned, yet, sometimes it can be an exception. By 07:00 PM we will have dinner and after some 30-45min we will make our way to the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe. By 10-10:30 PM we will be in Dushanbe and an overnight stay will be in a Hotel.
Day 5: Dushanbe (Overnight Stay in a Hotel)
Exploration of Dushanbe will start at 07:00-07:30 AM.
Dushanbe (Tajik meaning - Monday).Yet during Tsarist Russia, instead of Dushanbe, there were three tiny kishlaks (villages) Sari Osiyo, Shohmansur, and Dushanbe. The last one was well known for its Monday market and the most prosperous among the three. After the Great October Revolution when the Bolsheviks took over, the three villages were united under the name of Dushanbe. On July 14, 1922, Dushanbe became the capital of a newfound Tajik Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
DURING OUR TOUR IN DUSHANBE WE WILL GO THROUGH THE FOLLOWING SITES: Ethnography Museum, Rudaki Park, Rudaki Statue, Statue of Ismoili Somoni, National Museum, National Museum of Antiquities of Tajikistan, Gurminj Museum, Baryraq (Flagpole). Hissar Fort.
