Self-Drive to Celestial Mountains of Kyrgyzstan, 13 Days

Kyrgyzstan is a welcoming country where many people still live a nomadic or semi-nomadic way of life, dominated by animal herding and felt-making. What Kyrgyzstan lacks in settled history it makes up for in a wealth of nomadic traditions and a mountain paradise perfect for outdoor exploration and wild camping.

Day 1. Bishkek / ~ 80 km

Arrive in Bishkek. Transfer to the hotel. Rest. Meeting with our team. Drive to Ala-Archa natural park(Self Driving). (B/L/D)

Day 2Bishkek – Karakol / ~ 420 km

This day we will drive to the northern shore of Issyk-Kul lake. On the way we will visit Burana Tower and will drive by mountain roads from Grigorievskoe to Semenovskoe. Then we will visit Przhevalski Museum. We will stay for a night in Kapriz hotel, situated in the mountains.  (B/L/D)

Day 3. Karakol – Tosor pass (Alternative – Arabel valley) – Naryn / 300 km

This day you will enjoy the most difficult driving through the mountains. Over 200 km by the bumpy mountainous road will check your driving skills. However, the surroundings are so picturesque, green and virgin that you will appreciate this ride anyway. In the evening we will finally get to Naryn town where we will have dinner in a hotel (B/L/D)

Day 4. Naryn – Kel-Suu lake / ~ 190 km

After breakfast we will head to the valley of Ak-Say river. We will ascend Kyzyl-Bel pass, then will go down to At-Bashi valley. From the pass we will go down to the Valley of Ak-Say River which is one of the biggest alpine valleys in Kyrgyzstan. The bottom height of the valley varies from 3000 up to 3900 m above the sea level. It is a steep area covered by short-grassy meadow, which is an ideal habitat for a popular Marco Polo sheep. We will possibly get to Kel-Suu Lake (the terrain here is marshy, so we have to be very careful not go down the drain).

Kol-Suu Lake is situated at a height of 3500 m above the sea level and is surrounded by the high cliffs. The lake appeared from the landslip, which has blocked the river. Afterwards it turned into a basin with the length of 12 km.

Here we will set a camp and will spend a night under the stars. (B/L/D)

Day 5. Kel-Suu lake  – Tash-Rabat / ~ 140 km

This day we will go along the road to Chatyr-Kul Lake, which is situated close to the border with China. We will try to get to the shore of the lake and will spend the night not far from the Tash-Rabat Caravan-Saray.

Day 6. Tash-Rabat - Son-Kul Lake/ ~ 240 km

This morning we will drive around the Son-Kul Lake to see all its beauty. The lake is situated at the altitude of 3016m in the center of a small plateau, surrounded by a ring of mountains. The lake is one of the most beautiful spots in Kyrgyzstan. The shores are dotted with yurts (nomadic tents), inhabited by Kyrgyz families, spending  summer and grazing their animals (sheep, yaks and horses) up here. Arriving at the yurt camp.  (B/L/D)

Day 7. Son-Kul Lake - Suusamyr valley / ~ 220 km

We will leave Son-Kul Lake and drive to Suusamyr valley.  The first layover will take place at Djumgal valley. The valley is of the same size as Suusamyr valley, but it is drier. We will stay in Kyzyl-Oi village for lunch and will enjoy the view of one of the most beautiful rivers in Kyrgyzstan – Kekemeren River.

We will continue driving to Suusamyr through the mountains and valleys and will finally reach the Bay-Tur Kumys Complex. We will spend a night in cozy little rooms at the complex.  (B/L/D)

Day 8. Suusamyr valley – Arslanbob village / ~ 395 km of drive

We will drive to an amazing mountain valley, famous for its large wild forest. The valley is called Arslanbob

Its woodland is the largest walnut grove on earth. Kyrgyzstan's first known export to Europe was made thanks to  Arslanbob. Two waterfalls in the area attract tourists, pilgrims and other visitors in spring and summer months. You may walk to the first waterfall which is about 25 m high. It will take half an hour for you to get there. Then you can go to the place, where you will be able to see the whole gorge. We will enjoy the great view and will have a little free time to admire the nature and make some pictures. Dinner and Folk Show. Overnight in a guest house. (B/L/D)

Day 9. Arslanbob – Osh – Lenin Peak base camp / ~ 510 km of drive

In the morning we will finally head to Osh. It is one of the religious Muslim centers in Central Asia. Osh is known for its ancient mosques and Suleiman-Too (Suleiman-Takhty, The throne of Solomon), which is one of the places of pilgrimage in Central Asian.

This day we are going to get to the Lenin Peak Base Camp. A place where all the mountaineers and climbers start their ascent to the Lenin Peak(7134 m high) From the base camp you can admire a   great view of the surrounding mountains Overnight in tents. (B/L/D)

Day 10. Base camp at Lenin Peak / 50-80  km

This day you will drive around the neighborhood. You will drive to several beautiful places, such as Tengiz-Bai pass, Zindan cave, Daraut-Kurgan village and Alay valley. You will also have an opportunity to get acquainted with the life of alpinists, to watch them getting prepared to conquer the mountain and even to try to make your own little ascent. Who knows, maybe one day you will get back to the base camp, to try to conquer the Lenin Peak.  Overnight in tents. (B/L/D)

Day 11. Achik-Tash – Osh / ~ 300 km of drive

We will leave Achik-Tash and drive back to Osh.  Then we will rest a little and will plunge into the busy life of the town, visiting the local bazaar and going to an excursion to the sacred Suleiman mountain. Suleiman-Too is one of the most significant historical monuments in Kyrgyzstan. It is located in the center of Osh. It was called Bara-Kukh till the 16th century. Triple ascension to the mountain is considered to be equal to one Hajj to Mecca. In one of the caves of the mountain we will visit museum, then we will get back to the hotel. (B/L/D)

Day 12. Flight to Bishkek 

Fly back  to Bishkek. Arrive to the airport. Transfer to the capital. Free time. Accommodation at the hotel. You may walk around the town, stay at the hotel, swim in the pool and just relax. Farewell diner. (B/L/D)

Day 13. Departure

This morning the car will take you to the airport for your flight home. (B/-/-)

To participate in the tour, the off-road driving experience is NOT REQUIRED. All necessary training will be conducted on-site by our experience instructors.
