Ala-Archa national park. 1-day guided tour.

The Ala Archa National Park is an alpine national park in the Kyrgyz range of Tian Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan. It is in 42 km south of Bishkek and includes the gorge of the Ala-Archa River and the mountains surrounding it. It is a popular destination point both for weekend picnickers and adventure lovers. Great reason for it - big number of routes on surrounding summits. Mountain climbers looking for challenging ice, rock and mixed routes of different difficulties.

The park covers more than 16000 hectares, and the highest point is Semenova Tian-Shanski peak (4895m), the highest peak in the Kyrgyz Ala-tau range of the Tian Shan. There are more than 20 small and large glaciers and 50 mountain peaks within the park.  Two smaller rivers, the Adygene and the Ak-Sai, originate from these glaciers' melting water.

The Adygene gorge is a beautifully wooded valley, with river, streams, alpine meadows in upper part and glacial lake. There is same named peak - Adygene (4393m). The peak and its glacier could be seen even from Bishkek. Adygene gorge - is less visited place in Ala-Archa park and climbing the Adygene peak makes the trip a magnificent unity with nature.

Ak-Sai gorge is very popular with its dozens mountaineering routes on surrounding summits. There are two comfortable mountain huts where you can arrange accommodation just in 3-5 hours of hike from Alplager on 3300m. This place located on side moraine of Ak-Sai glacier and has name Ratsek stays. Name given in honor of Vladimir Ratcek - Soviet alpinist and geographist.

There are two quite comfortable huts and places for tents ot this stays. Climbers use this spot as a base camp for mountaineering in this area. Uchitel' (Teacher) peak which rises up to 4527m a.s.l. - is the highest trekking peak in post-Soviet countries. Famous peaks as Corona (4860m), Free Korea (4740m), Baichechekey (4515m) with it's difficult technical routes are achieved within 2-3 hours of approach.  With sure we can say that Ala-Archa is "Mekka" of mountaineering.

In Kyrgyz, Ala-Archa means bright, varicolored juniper. All gorge covered with juniper of different shapes and colors, and it gives fantastic feeling that all gorge is varicolored. There are more than 600 species of higher plants grows here, including 70 species of trees and shrubs, about 50 species of medicinal plants, many honey-plants and tannic plants.

Different animals live in Ala-Archa, with some luck you able to see argali, siberian roe deer, goat, boar, roe deer, fox, hare, badger, ermine, porcupine, marten. Some rinds of birds like stone ptarmigan, chill, keklik, ular are common here.  Ala-Archa is also home for such rare animal like snow leopard.

There are several options for day tour in Ala-Archa.

Hike to the waterfall. This option is good choice for beginners or for that people who prefer nice and unhurried walk instead of too much uphill.  We’ll start from Alplager and follow the trail up and left through forest. Then we up-traverse slope and get to the big stone, which looks like broken heart. Nice place for brake and make some photo. Further we’ll trek through Tepshi plateau covered with alpine herbs. Then the trail became almost horizontal and brings us to the Sharkiratma river which we need to cross. Depending of the season it could be from almost disappeared streamlet till a small river, which we can cross without problem. Finally, we’ll trek up to the wonderful waterfall, which is great place to make rest and picnic. After we’ll trek down slowly and drive back to Bishkek.

Hike to Ratcek stays. Day long trip, which lead us to the foot of Ak-Sai glacier, surrounded with snow-white peaks. It is a great option for well-trained people to make 1100 vertical meters uphill trip enjoying great views. After not steep way to the waterfall we need to manage steeper trail up which normally takes same time we needed to get to the waterfall. Not an easy hike, will be rewarded with spectacular views of the mountain peaks. We’ll have lunch nearby mountain hut then slowly go down.
