Western Mongolia Winter Exploration | Homestay at Kazakh eagle hunter | Nauryz - Kazakh Spring Festival | Two-day Nauryz Eagle Festival |Ulaanbaatar City Walking Tour | Homestay with Nomads
This trip is also customisable for January and February 2019
Join us in March as we spend time with the Kazakh eagle hunters that we work with directly throughout the year. These are our own personal friendships that we have personally built up over the past 13 years. We use no agents or tour operators - we work directly with all the families as this leads to a more personal insight for you as our guest.
Western Mongolia is dominated by the Altai Mountains physically and culturally. The Altai have functioned for thousands of years as a homeland for the nomadic cultures of Eurasia including the Kazakhs - Mongolia’s largest ethnic minority group with approximately 150,000 living in the provinces of western Mongolia.
Hunting with eagles (‘berkutchi’) is a form of falconry traditionally found throughout the Eurasian steppe. It is still practiced by the Kazakhs of western Mongolia. The three families you will stay with are eagle hunters and you will get to experience the traditional Kazakh way of life as well as how the Kazakhs train their eagles. The itinerary finishes with the two-day Nauryx eagle festival and then Nauryz Festival in Ulgii - the Kazakh celebration of the coming of spring - where you will join our Kazakh translator and her family as they enjoy this community event.
The price is on a sliding scale - depending on final group numbers. The maximum gorup size is six as this leads to a more personal experience for you. Transfers to and from the airport/train station are FREE.
