Western Mongolia: Highlights of Altai, 9 Day tour,

Join for an exciting trip to Mongolia’s most attractive alpine regions, the idyllic Khoton, Khurgan lakes and the magnificent Tavan Bogd mountain world.

DAY 1   Fly to Ulgii and Drive to Altai Tavan Bogd NP  

Catch an early flight to Ulgii city and meet our trip crew. Trip starts with a 5-6 hour drive over desert mountain landscapes to beautiful Tsagaan Gol valley (White River), the gateway to the Tavan Bogd Mountains. Enjoy the unforgettable stay at Tsagaan Gol! This stunning valley with its impressive alpine panorama offers amazing views. Here Tuvan people spend their summer who provide us with their pack camels to support the hike.

DAY 2  Hike into Tavan Bogd Mount.

Hike 16 km up to the base camp of Tavan Bogd massif supported with pack camels carrying our luggage and equipment. During the hike, enjoy extraordinary views of snow-capped peaks and glaciers. Pitch camp on close to 12 km long Potanin glacier. Overnight at the base camp.

DAY 3   Climb Malchin (Herder) Peak

Climb Malchin Peak (4020m) which is the lowest of the five peaks and non-technical. At the top a spectacular view over the Potanin glacier and high alpine panorama await you. Descend in the afternoon to the base camp. Some free time to explore the glacier. Overnight at the base camp.

DAY 4   Hike back to the valley

Hike back to Tsagaan Gol valley and have time to enjoy short horseback hike to small crystal clear blue lake on a neighboring hill and view the landscape around the lake.

Day 5. Drive to lakes area of NP

After breakfast, drive to the south east of the Altai Tavan Bogd NP where the idyllic Khoton and Khurgan lakes are situated. The area is summer pasture for Kazakh herder people and wonderful place with forested towering mountains over the lakes. En route you will see some ancient stone men and ancient burial mounds. Arrive at a Kazakh nomad herder family. Be welcomed by these hospitable people who will enjoy having guests. Have local meals in the large, colorful Kazakh yurt. The host is a falconer which means the opportunity of seeing and photographing his golden eagle is in the pocket.

Day 6  Waterfall & Nomad Kazakh family

The family lives close to the entrance of a valley and we’ll take a hike up to the far end of this valley to see a 13m waterfall. China is just on the other side of this mountain. Enjoy breathtaking scenery of the valley. Hike back to the family. Time to observe the daily life of these nomad herder people. Overnight.

Day 7. Day by Khoton lake

After one hour drive, arrive Khairakhty hill and pitch camp on the shore of Khoton lake. The hill is archaeological site. Enjoy your day exploring ancient rock carvings, swimming in the lake, fishing and taking a walk on the lake shore. In short, enjoy the day. Overnight.

Day 8.  Drive back to Ulgii

Drive back to Ulgii along Khovd river. Take rest at the hotel. Some time for souvenir shopping in the town center. Farewell dinner.

DAY 9.  Flight back to Ulaanbaatar

We will transfer you to the airport. Fly back to Ulaanbatar. (B).

For a confirmed booking, a deposit of (10%) is required. Deposit is paid by credit card (secure payment via Stripe, no credit card fees). The remaining balance can be paid in cash upon start of the trip - unless Host & Traveler agree on different payment methods.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations can be made free of charge up to 30 days prior to the beginning of the booked service. The deposit (10%) is only refundable if the booking is canceled at least 30 days in advance.
