Altai Mountain trek, Western Mongolian tour in 9 days

During this tour you will see snowcapped Altai mountains including the highest peak of Mongolia, the Khuiten peak and tourist’s favorite the Malchin peak which rewards you with a breathtaking view once you have reached the very top. Explore Potanin glacier which is second largest glacier in the central Asia. The Sacred Shiveet Khairkhan mountain, which was declared UNESCO world heritage in 2010, and White-River valley are home to the Tuvan tribe. Tuvan have their own language and believe in Shamanism. Experience incredibly wild nature in the Bear valley which is only accessible in summer time due to unmerciful elements. You have the opportunity to stay with a local family that will introduce you to the ancient tradition of hunting with eagles.

Arrive to Olgiy city, in Bayan-Olgii province. The land of the famous nomadic eagle hunters. The majority of the population of this region is Kazakh. At the airport you will be welcomed by your local expedition team consisting of a driver, cook and English speaking tour guide. Drive to Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. Make a stop half way to have our lunch. You can always ask for a break to take some pictures. Arrive at White-River valley (south gate of NP). Meet local Tuvan people. Stay overnight at tent or ger. DAY2: Trekking to base camp. All luggage will be transported by camels guided by local herders. If you prefer you can take a horseback day. It is about 16 km to the base camp and it usually takes around 5 hours by foot, the lunch will be served halfway. Explore Potanin glacier- this is the second biggest glacier in central Asia. Enjoy the panoramic view of Altai mountains. Stay overnight at tent. B/L/D
DAY3: Climb to Malchin Peak (4050m). The altitude of the base camp is around 3100m. The climbing to Malchin peak is possible without any special climbing equipment. This mountain is located right at the border to Russia and you will have a breathtaking view to the Russian side. The total hike takes around 7 hours. Back to base camp. Stay overnight at tent. B/L/D
DAY4: White-River valley. Back to the ranger station. Take a different trail along the river in one of the most beautiful valleys. The color of the water is milky white, because it comes from the glacier and the colorful dust makes it white. It is not drinkable until August. When you are back at the south entrance and you feel like hiking even more then you can take a walk to the green lake. It takes around a couple hours in total. Stay overnight at tent. B/L/D
DAY5: Trekking to Black valley which belongs to the local Tuvan people. We call this day a “follow the Sun” because all day the Sun will shine in front of you. Literally you will follow the sun’s trajectory. It takes around 6 hours trekking in total. On the way visit a local Tuvan family. Discuss with local herders and try some milk products. Stay overnight at tent. B/L/D
DAY6: Today we will go over the Takhilt pass. This is one of the steepest passes on our tour. The weather plays an important role, as if it's raining it makes it difficult for camels to go up. Today you will trek through Bear Valley. Hope to see some wild animals. Back in the days a lot of bears and deers were here. Nobody lives in that valley. Enjoy the virgin Mongolian nature. Stay overnight at tent.
DAY7: Trekking along the river in Bear valley. Follow the horse trail. Be ready to cross several rivers. At the end of the valley cars will expect us and we will switch to cars. Drive about 2 hours and stay at the Khoton lake. The Biluu hill is famous for its ancient petroglyphs and offers a gorgeous view over the lake and background forest mountains. Swimming and fishing allowed. Stay overnight at tent. B/L/D
DAY8: Drive back to Olgiy. On way we will visit a nomadic Eagle hunter. Explore traditional hunting with Golden eagles and the ancient culture of Kazakhs. Enjoy the hospitality of locals and be a part of a nomadic life. Have a tea with the family, discussions about eagle hunting and have a picture of a landed eagle on your arms Olgiy city tour visit local Kazakh museum and the market. In the evening have a farewell dinner, a traditional Kazakh meal. Stay overnight at hotel.
DAY:9 Fly back to UB

For a confirmed booking, a deposit of (10%) is required. Deposit is paid by credit card (secure payment via Stripe, no credit card fees). The remaining balance can be paid in cash upon start of the trip - unless Host & Traveler agree on different payment methods.
Cancellations can be made free of charge up to 30 days prior to the beginning of the booked service. The deposit (10%) is only refundable if the booking is canceled at least 30 days in advance.
