Eagle Festival 2019 - 10 days trip -Terelj, Western Mongolia

Golden Eagle Festival 2018 in Ölgii, Western Mongolia. 

Every year the eagle hunters of the Altai Mountains in western Mongolia take part in a competition to show which of the competing 90 to 100 eagles is the best in speed, agility, beauty and hunting skills. The festival takes place outside of the city Bayan-Ulgii for two days. The eagle competition is enriched with horse races, camel races and many more traditional ceremonies. Be part of this magnificent festival with one of its very own competitors. Enjoy the competitions on his side along with his eagle hunter friends from Altai. It's 10 days trip (customizable): 

 

September 29, Day 1 – Pick you up from the airport and drive to Mongolian nomadic family and sleep in their yurt /B; L; D/

After breakfast starts a drive to Terelj National Park, lying in the valley of the Terelj River 80 km northeast of Ulaanbaatar, Terelj national park has long been a holiday resort for people from the capital and short-stay tourists. It is one of the most visited areas in Mongolia due to its magnificent scenery and its proximity to Ulaanbaatar. On the way stop, we will see Eagle and Eagle hunter (but it depends on the Eagle hunter) 

The park's most spectacular features are its huge granite blocks and cliffs as well as meadows rich in wildflowers. Terelj offers fascinating rock formations including two famous formations named for things they resemble Turtle Rock (Mongolian: Melkhii Khad) and small meditation temple on top of the hill with great view. Overnight at Mongolian Nomadic Ger.

September 30, Day 2 – Terelj National Park, Chinggis Khan Statue and horse riding /B; L; D/

After breakfast, we have horseback riding activity. And then we will visit “Genghis Khan Statue Complex” which is currently the biggest (40m high) equestrian statue in the world. There is a recreation area, restaurants, and souvenir shops occupy the base structure. Then we will back to the city, get our dinner during the Mongolian live song.

October 1, Day 3 – Flight to the Olgii, Bayan-Olgii province and Kazakh traditional museum, Kazakh folk concert /B; L; D 

After breakfast, we will fight to the Olgii, Bayan-Olgii province and visit the Kazakh traditional museums. At dinner, you will get Kazakh traditional food while listening to a Kazakh folk concert. 

October 2 – October 5, Day 4 – 7 - Training with Eagle Hunter and horse riding 1 /Kazakh nomadic family/ /B; L; D/

Early morning we will start our drive to Kazakh Eagle Hunter Master’s yurt. Meet eagle hunter champion, and his family at their home. See the eagles in training, ride horses and enjoy the nomadic lifestyle. Sleep with the family in their yurts. Ride with the eagle hunters to the festival Ride with the eagle hunters and their eagles on their horses to the festival. The journey will take a total of four days. You will be riding your own horse and sleep in tents or yurts on the way. Your bags will be transported by car to the camping sites. If you don’t want to ride a horse, you can drive to the festival by car.

October 6 – October 7, Day 8-9 – Golden Eagle Festival Days /B; L; D/

The event typically has 60 to 70 Kazakh eagle hunters displaying their skills. The events include having their golden eagles fly to them on command and catching a fox fur being pulled being a horse from a perch on a nearby mountain. The event also features traditional Kazakh games like Kokpar (tug-of-war over a goat carcass while on horseback), Tiyn Teru (a timed race to pick up a coin on the ground while on horseback), and Kyz Kuar (“girl chase,” is a race between a man and woman where the woman whips the man while he tries to hold on). The festival also has a traditional Kazakh concert, camel race, and the festival also has a traditional Kazakh concert, camel race, and displays of Kazakh art.

The festival is regularly watched by more than 500 audiences including foreign tourists and representatives of the foreign embassies in Ulaanbaatar, international organizations and international companies.

This year event will be taken apart by the young eagle huntress Aisholpan Nurgeiv whose documentary has recently been released in the USA.

October 8, Day 10 – Flight back to the Ulaanbaatar city /B; L/

Our team gives you a ride to Olgii airport and pick you up the international airport of Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to the hotel.

What to bring: At this time of the year it is already getting colder. Be sure to bring a good sleeping bag, thermo underwear, a warm jacket, good trekking shoes and your camera. Bring clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Do bring also sunglasses or glasses because rides can be dusty. Electricity, showers, and flowing water might not be always available so be sure to bring an extra charger and your refreshment towels. For a confirmed booking, a deposit of (10%) is required. Deposit is paid by credit card (secure payment via Stripe, no credit card fees). The remaining balance can be paid in cash upon start of the trip - unless Host & Traveler agree on different payment methods.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations can be made free of charge up to 30 days prior to the beginning of the booked service. The deposit (10%) is only refundable if the booking is canceled at least 30 days in advance.
