Nomadic Altai Trekking

One of the most attractive and unusual tour type here in Mongolia is Trekking. Following trekking adventure will take place in Western Mongolia specially in Altai Tavan Bogd National Park.  In this remote corner where Mongolia, China, and Russia meet, we discover a beautiful swath of untouched wilderness. And you will have opportunity to feel real nomadic life & tradition during this epic journey. With Bactrian camels and powerful  horses to carry our luggages and team staff , we camp by alpine lakes, hike to glaciers, explore ancient burial mounds and petroglyphs that are haunting testaments to Mongolia's shamanic traditions, and experience a pristine mountain world where Kazakh nomads still hunt with golden eagles.

Trip Highlights:

Day 1: Fly from Ulaanbaatar to Ulgii & Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Day 2: Tavan Bogd Massif ( 30km horse ride in one day, up& down  to Altai Tavan Mountains )

Day 3: Start Hiking to Khar Airikh Valley

Day 4: Altai Pass(3200 m from sea level)

Day 5: Hike to Bear Valley

Day 6: To Green lake

Day 7: Continue hiking to the end of the Bear Valley

Day 8: Drive to Nomadic family and camp at the shore of Hoton lake.

Day 10: Drive to Eagle Hunter’s Family

Day 11: Stay with eagle hunter’s family and at the evening drive back to Ulgii.

Day 12: Catch an early flight back to UB.

Detailed itinerary:

Day 1 Ulgii & Altai Tavan Bogd National Park-5-6 hours drive. Lunch, dinner(LD)

Catch an early flight to Ulgii, western province of Mongolia. After tour briefing we will drive 180km via the village of Ulaanhus over desert mountain landscapes (5-6hrs) and reach the road end. This is home place of Tuvan people,other small ethnic group in Mongolia. Here we will meet with the nomads who will supply horses and camels for our trek. This place is called Ranger station of White River valley. Overnight in yurts(ger).

 Day 2, Tavan Bogd massif (30km horse riding)- BLD

Today we ride horse for the 30km(15km for one side ride)  towards the snow-capped TavanBogd massif. We will see 20km long Potanina glacier – the biggest of the twenty glaciers in Mongolian Altai. Tavan Bogd means “The Holy Five” referring to the five highest peaks, of which Huiten Uul( Cold peak ) is the highest in Mongolia, 4374 meters above sea level.. The other peaks are: Nairamdal( Friendship ), Ulgii, Burged(Eagle) and Malchin(Nomad). Enjoy the gorgeous view of all of them during the sun set and sun rise. By the evening ride back to Ranger station of White River valley. Overnight in yurts(ger).

Day 3, Hike to the Khar Airikh Valley-16km hike, BLD

Today we load our luggages on camels and start hike to the Khar Airikh Valley via Shiveet Hairhan Uul( Carved Holly Mountain ).  There are about 400 Ibexes (Capra sibirica) on the top of the Shiveet Mountain. So, if we lucky we can see & capture some of them during the trek. Overnight with Tuvan nomadic family(another small ethnic group in Mongolia). 

Day 4, Altai Mountain crossing-12km hike, BLD

Today we will pass the Altai at the highest elevation ( 3200 m from sea level ). After crossing the Altai Mountain we enter to Bear Valley as local nomads used to call. We are now in a scenic area, where small streams develop into rives fed by the melting glaciers flowing down broad steppe valleys. Overnight tented camping.

Day 5, Hike down to Bear Valley- 15km hike, BLD

Hike down to Bear Valley where the nomads bring their cattle to feed and make them fat enough because the place is heaven for the animals as there is lot of green grass and clear stream waters. Overnight tented camping.

Day 6, Green Lake-15km hike, BLD

Trek down a valley with patches of Larch forests and reach the so called Green Lake( also called Heart lake ), where we pitch camp. Overnight tented camping.

Day 7, Continue hiking to the end of the Bear Valley-15km hike, BLD

Today we will continue trekking downhill to the Aral Tolgoi ridge and meet with the vehicle team and say goodbye to our Camel and horse rangers. We will overnight here in tents.

Day 8, Drive to Nomadic family and camp at the shore of Hoton lake.- 2 hour drive, BLD

Today we will drive to the Hoton lake. Here you can see snowcapped mountains which makes wall between Mongolia and China. We will be able to see one of the biggest petroglyphs from the iron and bronze ages and Turkic invasions which is listed to UNESCO’s World heritage site. Nice place to pitch our camp.

Day 9, Day with nomads- 1,5 hour drive, BLD

Today we will drive to a Kazakh nomadic family where we will organize a small nomadic ceremony by inviting all neighbors and slaughtering a sheep and have “ Five fingers” feast.  Sing songs and enjoy your time with nomads.

Day 10, Drive to Eagle Hunter’s Family- 4-5 hours drive, BLD

Drive to Eagle Hunter’s family through Hurgan lake and Khovd river valley, stop by some deer stones and balbals (Turkic stone man). By the evening arrive to the Kazakh Eagle hunter family, get introduced with the eagle hunting traditions and skills. See the bird.  Stay in ger with Eagle Hunter’s family.

Day 11, Stay with eagle hunter’s family and at the evening drive back to Ulgii-2 hours drive, BLD

Today you will get introduced with some skills and traditions Hunting with Golden Eagle of Mongolian Kazakh people. Taking pictures with Hunter and his Golden Eagle and see some training process of Hunting with eagle. By the evening we drive back to Ulgii city. Farewell dinner with local staff. Overnight at hotel.

Day 12, Catch an early flight to Ulaanbaatar. BL

Catch an early flight to UB. After check in to the hotel we will drive to Chinggis Khan equestrian statue at Tsonjin Boldog. Chinggis Khan equestrian statue is a 40-metre tall statue of Genghis Khan on horseback, on the bank of the Tuul river at Tsonjin Boldog,(54 km east of the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar), where according to legend, he found a golden whip. The statue is symbolically pointed east towards his birthplace. At the evening drive back to Ulaanbaatar. End of the trip!

For a confirmed booking, a deposit of (10%) is required. Deposit is paid by credit card (secure payment via Stripe, no credit card fees). The remaining balance can be paid in cash upon start of the trip - unless Host & Traveler agree on different payment methods.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations can be made free of charge up to 30 days prior to the beginning of the booked service. The deposit (10%) is only refundable if the booking is canceled at least 30 days in advance.
