Tour of Western Kazakhstan (9 days)

Tour of Western Kazakhstan (9 days)

West Kazakhstan is located in the west and southwest of Kazakhstan. It includes the West Kazakhstan Atyrau, Mangistau and Aktobe regions.

In the territory of Western Kazakhstan, there are many interesting for autotourism, both natural and local historical sites, such as the plateau of the Aktolagai, Ustyurt plateau, the legendary Mount Sherkala, underground mosques carved into the rock, and much more. A special place in Western Kazakhstan is played by the peninsula Mangyshlak (Mangistau), its canyons and gorges, hot (up to 50 degrees in summer) and rare sources of fresh water. The population density of Mangistau is only two (!) per square kilometer.

Tour program:

Day 1: Aktau. Hotel accommodation. Transfer from the airport / train station.

Day 2: Necropolis Shopan Ata, necropolis Becket Ata

Visit the necropolis of Becket-Ata and Shopan-ata. Departure from the city of Aktau to the underground mosque Becket ata. The pilgrimage begins with the underground mosque of the saint, whose name is Shopan-ata, who according to legend is the spiritual mentor of Beket-ata. Necropolis Shopan-ata, located on the old caravan road from Mangyshlak to Khorezm, is located in the south-eastern part of the peninsula. It stretches on both sides of a not deep and narrow ravine descending the slopes of the hill of the "sacred mountain" Shopan ata. Having visited the underground mosque of Shopan-ata and having rested, you will continue the way to the sacred ground of Becket ata, where the most important part of the pilgrimage begins. Walking along a winding path, among the rocks you need to go to the mosque. You are waited by a meal-burbarm, prepared from a sacrificial animal, then all are arranged for the night in a guest house.

Day 3: Boszhira (White Fang), Tanbaly-Tas, Senek sands, Temir Baba

Boszhira - the site of the chink (border) of the Ustyurt plateau, where nature gave complete freedom to its imagination, created an unearthly landscape in white chalk tones. A huge Boszhirinsky valley is surrounded on three sides by an amphitheater of natural fads. Here everything is white - canyons, peaks, mountain-towers, mountains-castles, mountains-yurts. The business card of the Bozzhir are two limestone peaks, nicknamed for their shape by the Fangs (Azu Tester). Their height from the base reaches more than 200 meters. Few people know the path can bring a traveler to a narrow viewing platform, which offers unforgettable views of the Boszhirinsky valley of castles. The journey through Boszhir usually consists of two parts: foot and road trips.

The cult object of Saint Temir Baba is located on the coast of the Kendirli peninsula in Mangistau. Mangistauts say that Saint Temir is "the ruler of the water and water is dripping from him all the time". Kazakhs tell many legends about Temir Baba and consider him the saint of the Turkmen period Mangistau. Temir Baba is considered "the ruler of the waters", because on the Kendiri spit you can always dig a well in the sand with fresh water. The source of fresh water in such anhydrous desert area next to the salt sea is a huge rarity.

Overnight in a guest house or in tents on the shore of the Caspian Sea.

Day 4: Karaman- Ata Necropolis, Otpan tau complex, Sherkala mountain, Ayrakty-tau.

Karaman-Ata necropolis is located in the central part of the Mangyshlak peninsula, 5 km west of the Kandybas tract. Necropolis Karaman-Ata refers to the earliest burial-cult complexes of Mangistau. In the gentle slope of the hill, the underground mosque was cut down by masters, presumably 12th century. This is the only underground mosque that is completely underground. It consists of three rooms: an entrance room, a prayer hall and a room where, according to legend, Karaman-ata itself is buried. In this mosque they taught children to read and write.

Mountain Otpan tau, located at an altitude of 532 meters above sea level, is the highest point of the Karatau mountain range.

On the top of Otpan tau, a few centuries ago, Kazakhs from the Adai clan kindled a fire, which served as a signal of impending danger.

At its top are two buildings - a 37-meter-high monument to Adai and two steles-minarets, which rise to the right and left of the Aday Ata monument. Further, below, at a distance of approximately 455 meters, the building of the round Aksaray is erected, in which up to 1000 people can be accommodated.

Sherkala is a lonely standing mountain, of unusual shape, about 94km to the north-east from the city of Aktau, in the 18km village of Shetpe. If you look at it from one side, the mountain looks like a huge white yurt, but on the other - Sherkala is like a sleeping lion, who laid his huge head on its paws. Therefore, the mountain was named - Sherkala, which in translation from Turkmen means "Lion Mountain" or "Lion Mountain". The lion's mountain is surrounded by a halo of curious legends. Its limestone slopes are steep and only become to the top of the hill, forming a giant tent reminding the top of the yurt. You can climb it only with special equipment. To get around Sherkala, it will take at least an hour. And if you want to look into some of the numerous caves, wander around the site of an ancient settlement, looking for shards, witnesses of old civilizations, then you will not have enough hours. There is a popular belief, if you make a wish, before going around around Sherkaly, it will come true.

Mount Airacty-tau is located in a small mountain system called Ayrakty-Shomanay. Mountains of Airacty-Shomanay are like fairy-tale castles with towers, spiers and fortress walls. In the spring in the valley among the mountains of Arakat-Shomanay the Sogdiana tulips grow, mouflons are found from the fauna.

On the eastern side of the Araqta-Shomanay there is a site with deposits of globular nodules. From the south to the top of the main mountain of Arakaty there is a trail. In the mountain there is a deep cave in which locals are afraid to go.

Overnight in a guest house or in tents.

Day 5: Valley of balls, Kapamsay tract, Akespe, Shakpak-ata rock mosque

Valley of balls. according to one of the local legends, the hordes of enemies came to Mangistau land, covering the land like locusts. The locals stretched their hands to heaven in prayer for help and were heard. The heavens opened with torrential streams, thunder and lightning. In an instant all the enemies turned into stones. Thus appeared on Mangistau endless fields and ridges of unusual stone formations - globular concretions.

Their size ranges from several centimeters to four meters in diameter. Nodules lie in the sandy strata of the valleys between the Karatau ridge and the ledges of North and South Aktau. Time of origin - 180 - 120 million years ago, geological era - Mesozoic, period - Lower Chalk. Concretion - from the Latin word concretio - fusion, condensation. These rounded forms are formed in loose seams of sedimentary rocks with a liquid filler content under the influence of electro magnetic fields. The centers of such a connection can be magnetized grains of minerals, shells, teeth and bones of fish, plant remains. However, geologists do not have a clear view of the process that created these mysterious entities.

Kapamsay is located in the Silicon Valley of Mangistau. These are large chalky sheer cliffs, at the foot of which once ran a narrow but deep river. At the bottom of the dried-up bed is a green grove with huge centuries-old trees. Travelers sometimes do not reach the bottom of the river, as they are interested in collecting silicon stones, which are strewn with terrain. The surface of the soil is covered with a light coating of salt, there are no sources of fresh water, no less than vegetation.

Terrain, completely unadapted for humans and animals. At a height of three meters, a cave is cut in the wall of the canyon. It is not known who left the staircase at her entrance. This uninhabitable dwelling clearly shows that it served as a shelter for some.

The place of Akespe is literally translated as white mountains, also called as a chess valley. It is located along the Tauchin route to Kalamkas, Karazhanbas. Aksep in Mangistau is a very picturesque place about which one can say simply - it is better to see once than hear a hundred times. If you go there you will see many beautiful landscapes and unique places of Mangistau region. Such beautiful chalk slopes can be seen only in this place of our planet. Many travelers who travel to western Kazakhstan, call in Akespe where they make incredible pictures.

The Shakpak-Ata Rock Mosque is considered one of the most striking Sufi monuments of Mangistau. In the old days, this place was considered difficult to access and even benign. Now there is a grader road laid out, and this place is marked in navigators. Inside the cave everything is absolutely white - and the floor, and the ceiling, and the walls, because the mosque is cut in the chalky massif. Even a small window that barely perceptibly fills the interior with light. In the cave mosque there are several rooms connected by walkways. And up the spiral stone staircase, which goes to the flat top of the rock, where the pavilion is built. At the foot of the rock there is a necropolis dating from the 12th-20th centuries.

Nature itself created this temple, and the master-stone-cutters who came here only adapted it for their purposes, giving it a final look.

Overnight in a guest house or in tents.

Day 6: Tamshaly Canyon, Fort-Shevchenko Museum, Blue Bay

Tamshaly is a green oasis in the desert. On the one hand sheer cliffs, on the other - a huge valley, leaving in the sea. Through the rocks water breaks through. Tourists and locals come here to listen to the sound of the drip. In translation, "Tamshaly" is called "drops". The local residents and tourists like to relax in this amazing place, "under the peak" of the unique natural canyon of Tamshaly, in the shade of spreading trees, listen to the sound of a falling drop, observe the clouds, birds singing especially loudly in this area. An amazing lake is in the depths of the gorge. When it appeared, it is unknown.

The Shevchenko Museum is a museum in Fort-Shevchenko city, Mangistau region (Kazakhstan), dedicated to the great Ukrainian poet, artist, prose writer, ethnographer Taras Shevchenko, who spent many years of his life in Kazakhstan, devoting a significant part of his creativity and research. The museum was opened in 1932 and is the first museum opened in Mangyshlak. The main part of the exposition is the materials telling about the life and creativity of T. Shevchenko in 1850 - 1857, when after the arrest in Orenburg the poet was sent to Novopetrovsk fortification. The Shevchenko Museum is located in the summer residence of the commandant of the fortress Irakly Uskov. The building is more than 150 years old.

In the onzhag area on the shore of the Caspian Sea, there is a place that has long been chosen by tourists and simply resting. Once, in the direction of Fort-Shevchenko, there was even a stop at Tulkuli-Sai. There were many who wished to have a rest during the swimming season in picturesque places called Aktausi Blue Bay. For a long time, rest on the coast is remembered in the so-called holey stones filled with sea water after the storms. Tulkuli-Cai is considered an artesian basin of local importance. Until now, not far from these places is a fresh spring. There are many wells in the area.

Overnight in a guest house or in tents.

Day 7: Zhigulgan break, necropolis Sultan-epe

Zhigylgan's place is simply fantastic. Imagine, the plain, and then everything ... the end, the failure in the abyss with absolutely steep rocks up to 80 meters high, the edge of the earth in the form of a regular circle with a diameter of ten kilometers. Zhigylgan - so Kazakhs call this place on the Caspian coast, which means "fallen down". Picturesque cliffs of the neighborhood, like the ruins of an ancient city, are reflected in the water, giving the opportunity to play fantasy and imagination. One thing is clear - it's almost impossible to drown in them. A high salt content in the water does not let go to the bottom.

Sultan-epe is a unique monument of antiquity of the 9th-12th centuries. Unlike the mosques of Becket-Ata, Shopan-Ata, Shakpak-Ata, it is not a city of the dead, a burial place for people. There are single graves in the neighborhood, but they are not indicative. There is no burial place here and the Sufi Sultan-epe itself. The pristine beauty of this corner of Mangyshlak, located thirty kilometers from the village of Tauchik, is admired: picturesque slopes, thickets of mulberry and hawthorn, a well with fresh and very tasty water. Almost at the slope of the gorge there is a large burial. It is a rounded stone fence, inside which is a stone mound. In the embankment seven steep poles were stuck, twined with white scraps. Since ancient times, the pole symbolizes a tree that connects the world of the dead, the world of the living and the eternal sky. The mosque consists of 9 rooms. The entrance to the underground part of the mosque leads from a closed narrow room located in the southwestern part of the riverbed. The central gallery leads to almost all rooms, except one, which is located separately. Overnight in a boarding house.

Day 8: Radon fountain, Karazhar gorge, Karagan-Bosaga cave

The Caspian Sea is not the only attraction of Aktau. There is also a place in Mangistau where you can swim all the year round and this is a radon source. This place is located about 40 kilometers from the city of Aktau. The source was discovered in the last century, and for many years now the residents and guests of the city have been pleased with their hot water, the temperature of which is around 40-50 degrees. In recent years there has been an active ennobling of the Aktau radon, a whole complex has already been built around it, which continues to develop constantly.

The cave in Mount Karagan is on the way to the Kugusem well. The cave impresses with its location - the entrance from afar as a specially made funnel, and near - inside - a step entrance. The walls are limestone, layers of gypsum. Traces of moufflons are visible. Nearby there are wells - Karagan Kudygy.

Overnight in a guest house or in tents.
