Cultural tour in South and East Georgia

 

Program may be changed a little according to weather, road, interest of traveller; it may be more or less according hotel quality and days needed or other conditions.

Day 1

Tbilisi (mostly walking around 5 km.)

Breakfast at the hotel

10.00 visit State Museum of History and see the Golden Treasury of the Museum.

Visit the highlights of old and new city: walk to Anchiskhati Basilica 6th c).

Lunch at the national restaurant nearby.

Then continue walking to Sioni Cathedral (6-13cc). Visit Tbilisi Museum at Caravanserai. Metekhi Church (13th c.), take cable car to Narikala Fortress (from at least 4th c) looking over the old town, walk down to Sulfur bath-houses.

 Dinner at the local restaurant.

Overnight at the hotel in Tbilisi   

Day 2

Tbilisi – Gori – Akhaltsikhe (around 250 km)                                                               

After breakfast drive towards Mtskheta, ancient capital of Georgia and visit Cross Monastery (6th -7th cc.) and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.

Pass small city of Gori (optional visit at J. Stalin’s museum).

Lunch at the local restaurant. Later we will visit temple-town Uplistsikhe (12 km from Gori) with its streets, churches, ruined palaces, residential dwellings and storerooms carved into the soft stone of the mountainside from 11 c. BC. Drive to Spa resort Borjomi, taste mineral water at Borjomi older park. Drive to Akhaltsikhe.

Dinner and overnight in Akhaltsikhe.

Day 3

Akhaltsikhe – Vardzia – Akhaltsikhe (around 300 km)                  Breakfast at the hotel. Check-out. Visit Vardzia - cave city and monastery complex of 12th c.  which in 13th c. became well defended monastery complex. The frescoes of 12th c are still well preserved; here you will find one of the images of King Tamara – the first woman who ascended to throne in feudal Georgia; Lunch near the sight. Visit Khertvisi fortress of 10th c. on the route and drive to Akhaltsikhe.

Dinner and overnight in Akhaltsikhe

 Day 4

Akhaltsikhe– Tbilisi (around 250 km)

Breakfast at the hotel in Akhaltsikhe. Visit Rabati fortress, (from at least 9th. c.), renovated in 2011. Visit local Ethnographical museum with unique archeological materials excavated in the region of Samtskhe. Drive to the Capital Tbilisi.

Lunch on the road.

Day 5

Tbilisi – Kakheti region -Tbilisi (around 400 km)

 We’ll explore a picturesque and the most fertile part of Georgia - Kakheti, which borders the Great Caucasus range from the north Alazani Valley. The summits of the range are over 3 000 m. The region is known as a birthplace of viticulture. The fertile land, burning sun and hard work have developed about 500 varieties of vine in Georgia. The history, culture and lifestyle of Georgians are embodied in Georgian wine - symbol of the hospitality, friendship, tolerance and a key to the mysterious charm of Georgia.

After breakfast (recommended at 08:30) drive towards Kakheti province, to the fortress and church from 16th c. in Gremi – formal capital of Kakheti kingdom; then visit the house-museum of the poet and public figure, nobleman of the 19th c. Alexandre Chavchavadze in Tsinandali.

Then you will enjoy your lunch with wine tasting at wine factory (or at the local house).

Then drive to Signagi with 18th c. city architecture and  beautiful view of Alazani valley; visit Signagi Ethnographical museum (optional visit St. Nino’s monastery in 2 km. from Signagi).

Return to Tbilisi at around 21:00.
