The Ykhlas Museum of Folk Musical Instruments is unique throughout Central Asia, and also has a special significance in the history of world museums, as the fifth museum specializing in folk musical instruments throughout the world.
The museum was built in 1908 by the project of the famous architect A.P. Zenkov (1863-1936). After graduating from the Academy of Engineering in St. Petersburg in 1893, A.P. Zenkov arrives in Verny (now Almaty) in 1899. Here he was one of the designers of the Cathedral. The construction of the Cathedral was completed in 1907, and in 1908 he began to draft the House of Military Meetings of the Faithful (today the Museum of Folk Musical Instruments named after Yhlas). The building, built in 1908 according to the project of Vernensky architect A.P. Zenkov, is a unique example of wooden architecture "Ropetovskogo" style.
The museum’s fund contains not only Kazakh folk instruments, there are also instruments of the Turkic peoples and more than 40 countries of the world, a total of 1,244 exponents, familiarizing with the musical culture of different countries. Works 8 exhibition halls. These are: the hall of the beginning of folk music, the hall of wind instruments, percussion noise instruments, the hall of memorial musical instruments, the hall of kobyz, the hall of craftsmen’s manufacturers, the hall of musical instruments of the Turkic-speaking countries, the hall of musical instruments of the peoples of the world.
